Suggestions on separating already formed dreads?

I am at the 2-3 mark of my dreads with the TnR method. I need to separate some of them but they are pretty tight and thick and I am having a hell of a time. I tried yesterday and as soon as I heard some hair break I pretty much gave up.

Does anyone have any suggestions or methods on how to separate dreads without putting too much damage on your hair?

well by the time i noticed mine i had to rip them hard to get them apart ..as far as doing it more gently maybe put some conditioner in them to loosen the knots just in the specific dread your trying to seperate

I think I'll go at it by soaking them and using condit something. Might just have to bush most out then dread them again.

There are videos on Babas page. But, you can separate from the tips or the bottoms. I hear that it is safer from the bottoms, and when done while hair is wet. How big are the sections in question? Are they congos or are they just single dreads that got too big?

I find it easier toseparate right after i wash them. The few hairs that are holding the dreads together will break. Separating is often called popping or ripping because you will hear the hairs break. It is normal. It doesn't make your dreads weaker like the breakagecrochetdoes. If they are only a few months old, don't use conditioner to separate unless it is a solid mass. The conditioner will loosen the hair inside your dread.
