HELP!!! NEW TO DREADS! WEIRD DREADING METHOD?

Hey everyone, my name's Claudia and I'm gonna cut straight to the chase.

Ok so last Saturday (the 8th of December) I went to start my dread journey! I've had natural hair for 2 years and only recently decided to dread. I'm black by the way so my hair was full on afro before dreading.

Before actually deciding to dread my hair i did a lot of research on dreads and methods of dreading and found around 4-5 different methods! So going to my loctician I expected one of the 4-5 methods to be used! Instead a completely WEIRD and foreign method was used on my afro! :O

So i get there and my loctician tells me that all he's going to use to dread my hair is a sponge, some water and wax! At first i was a bit confused as to how on earth a SPONGE of all things could be used to DREAD!

He starts off by spritzing my hair with a little bit of water and then starts rubbing my hair, with the sponge... in circular motions...
I've NEVER, SEEN or even HEARD of such a dreading method! He didn't even part my hair or anything! just kept spritzing and rubbing!

I will admit that after some rubbing my hair started to matt! He then separated my hair and gave it the size i had asked. Now i say he separated my hair... but he didn't part it with a rat tail comb. SO the parts are barely visible and not straight or uniform AT ALL!!

After HOURS and HOURS (9am-10pm) of spritzing and rubbing he then a applied wax to, literally, one or two locks! And that's it! He claims he hasn't finished the process of dreading my hair and that i should return on Wednesday (12th of December) so that he can now "twist" the dreads and make them stay?

I'm so confused and worried and just don't know what to do! I don't want my dreads to start out badly! I've never seen or heard of this method and frankly the fear of the unknown is WRECKING MY HEAD!

My hair doesn't look particularly bad, but i've heard/read some bad stuff on wax and don't know what to think! I also wanted my dreads to be well parted kind of like braids! But my loctician claims that they will part on their own! Is this true? I hardly think so :/

PLEASE HELP ME :'( I appreciate it <33

new erf trust a loctician they are scams

wash that nasty wax out demand a refund tell him any loctician that dares use wax should be put out of business and sued!

now heres all u need to dread

stop combing

why would u want parts and evenness? u know when you see the scalp? thats what locticians call tidy but its a medicl condition that will cause balding

you never should see your scalp with dreads or braids!

ok if you wish to control the size u can do that while dreading naturally by seperation or u can start the process by sectioning andtwisting ..

but

never ever retwist or you will fall into the balding pattern locticians cause

It sounds like this loctician is one of the many self-professed "experts" that use bizarre techniques that always need to be maintained and *of course* you gotta shell out money on a regular basis with their assurance that one day you won't need to. Their methods also happen to be very damaging to the hair and scalp causing traction alopecia.

Wax is horrible for dreads, and prevent dreading. Bad for the scalp, difficult to get out, it traps dirt/moisture/particles, and more importantly, it doesn't assist in dreading - it just glues it together to give the appearance of a mature lock. The locks also turn out super thin and leave a white residue in the core.

I wouldn't go back to that guy, definitely a snake oil salesman using snake oil products.

theres a weird assed sponge thingy i saw on yourtube its rediculouse it makes you look like a hedghog

i think its called nudred or something

be glad it wasnt the other silly dreading invention that rotates around your hair hammering hundreds of crochet hooks through it mangling yoir hair

so glad u found us now u can start out right..free

no 10 hours of turture and hundreds of dollars wasted

locticians a made up term lock technician they use terms like installing dreads

this is designed ti make you believe dreads are complicated

all u gotta do is not comb dreads happen

hows that requite a technical degree?

but the so called pros do everything 100% wrong thats why they all are going bald but they shame u into thinking bald is tidy and any loose hair means your dirty (even tho the loctician sid dont wash or wet it fir a year but to dread right qll u do is wash wash wash every 2-4 days

scammers

Thaaaat's kind of REALLY depressing! WEEKS?! :'( </3 Is there no way at all it can just go on it's own? :( When i asked the "loctician" about the wax he said that all i had to do was Heat the wax up an dthat it would simply disappear after a while...

Heather Barbee said:

Well wax is a no no and when your hair is wet it makes it weaker. Wax and water seems like a bad mixture. wax traps in moisture and causes mold. Most locticians dont make healthy locs. They also tell you not to wash your hair which is false. Also twisting is bad too. I know some that use this to remove wax

  • - cup baking soda
  • 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar
  • 30 - 40 drops lemon eucalyptus OR orange essential oil
  • 30 - 40 drops lavender essential oil
  • 1 - 1 cup of witch hazel

I also heard it can take a week to get all wax out

And yes they do part on their own.

heatting it up doesnt just make it go away wax is extremely hard to remove and has survived 10 years of washing its evil stuff

if your only days in your better off combing them out starting over right i cant imagine how good 12 hours of agresive rubbing is for your hair haha so maybe only comb out the waxy ones wash well with dawn dish soap (fairy liquid in england maybe ireland too) scrun=hb repeat if needed get wax b gone from www.dredlockshampoo.com

next

let your hair dread itself! u dont need a specialist your hair knows how to dread!

where else you could possibly go? right where you are this is the best place tolearn to dread right with no locticians ripping you off no scammy waxy messes no hair glued together to resemble dreads

just pure and simple ..let it dread

if u want to strart them off lil more controlled twist or twist n rip

al.l starter methods do however is define the sections when really the sections are better off defining themselves

Well I don't fault you at all. I went to dreadhead hq til I found this website, i even went to a loctician for a consultation and she like brushed my hair with a bent comb and ripped hair right out. 5 minutes later I left and said I forgot my wallet for the consultation. She wanted to charge me $100 a session and I'd have to come back every 2 weeks for a year. No worries, your hair will be fine just get the wax out..
