ok so ive had my dreads for like 9-10 months at this point and they look great, but whenever im around someone else with dreads i feel like a complete fool...i get really self-conscious about what my dreadies look like. the other night was almost embarrassing to me because my boyfriends mother (who knows absolutely NOTHING about dreads) kept asking me if she could deep condition my hair and comb it all out. ok i seriously thought she was joking at first so i was like haha yea right. but after literally 20 minute of her telling me she was going to do it i had to explain to her, its never gonna happen. if i had nice beautiful undamaged hair i would totally go for it, so i could start a new set of dreads more naturally, but most of my hair is o broken and damaged from my ex-bf and ex-bff "working" on my dreads when i first did them. anyway, his mom would not listen to me when i said like all of my hair is broken so my hair would probably be like 5-6 inches long if i did that...shit i would have a mullet, all the hair is broken in the front and on top, the back hair almost never got touched...

I would never get rid of my dreadies for good, but i know im going to cut most of them when they are way longer, jut because all of the broken ones look ragged as fu*k and i would much rather have healthy dreads then dead hair coming out randomly.

and people seriously need to stop randomly telling me what to put in my hair out on the street...THERE IS NO WAY IN HELL IM EVER PUTTING THAT NASTY SHIT IN MY HAIR, i try to explain why i wont and they usually say so? whats so bad about that, dreads are dirty anyway, etc. etc. etc.

sorry i really needed to get that out, im just a little frustrated with people lately :/

Do the people telling you to put stuff in your hair have fabulous dreads? No? Well then just ignore it lol. It seems to me all the really bad, random and unasked for advice comes from people who have never had dreads. Or people who had dreads for 2 months a few years ago. Anyone who "had dreads" for 2 months ...never really had dreads. Just smile at their silliness and go on with life. Don't let it bother you. You know more about it right now than they ever will.

Why would you feel self conscious? Your dreads look great. They are your lion's mane! Be proud of them. The people that you are embarrassed around started out with baby locks just like you. They didn't wake up one morning with mature dreads!! They know what you are going through. They went through all the same stages of knotting.

So you might have started out with some damaging methods...but that does not mean that your dreads are ruined. You are treating them the healthy way now. That is what is important!
