They will lock themselves. If they didn't Eagle would have about 5 inches of locked hair and 20+ feet of straight hair. I'd have 4-6 inches of locked hair and ~3 feet of straight hair.
The loose, unknotted hair at your roots tangle with new growth forming new knots. These knots are what cause your roots to lock up as they grow. There's nothing you need to do to force it to happen. In fact, if you try and force it to happen quickly, you think out your roots by not allowing them anything to snag onto as new growth grows in

Welcome. First suggestion. NEVER crochet. crocheting is the second worst thing that has ever happened to the concept of dreadlocks. It destroys your hair, irrevocably. With every pass of the hook, it shreds your hair into smaller and smaller pieces. By doing this, you are creating more and more broken hairs that pop out and make it feel like you need to crochet more to fix that damage. But really, itpropagatesthe cycle.
Crocheting allo adds about 6 months to your progress, with just the first session. Continued crocheting can cause your locks to take years longer to mature. The act of crocheting does not create knots. It only folds ripped hair over itself. These aren't knots. And because every hair gets shredded, your locks get weaker and weaker. In time, they can get weak enough to snap off in places, or at the root, leaving a bald spot.
Second suggestion... NEVER EVER use lemon or lime juice. Those are citric acid. While citric acid isn't a strong acid, it's strong enough that it seeps into your hair shaft and degrades your hair from the inside out. When you hear of people lightening their hair with lemon juice, that is how the damage shows up.
