Unfortunately even crocheting that infrequently does a lot of damage. With every pass of the hook, it breaks hundreds of hairs into pieces. Those loose frizzies would eventually get sucked into a lock. But because of the ripping the hook is doing, more and more frizzies are formed, making them pop out more often and frequently. Which makes it seem like you need to crochet again to fix it. Which, again, makes more frizzies to pop out. It's a never ending cycle. If you stopped crocheting, you'd go through a phase where your locks got super messy while they recovered, but would eventually fix themselves up.

Welcome. Did you just crochet to start them? I feel like I should warn you that crocheting is actually worse than wax. Wax is nasty and can cause mold, but it can be scrubber out with a lot of detergent and time.

Crocheting does nothing to help locks mature. Those needles were and still are designed fr making things out of yarn and thread. They only rip hair into smaller and smaller pieces, which, over time, makes your locks weaker to the pint tat they can snap off in places. It also over tightens your locks so they become stiff and hard. Mature locks should be soft and spongy.

If you only did it once, a lot of damage was still done, but it can heal itself to a point. The ripped hairs won't reattach, but your locks can get stronger. It's great that you didn't mix it with wax or gels.

Check out the recovery pages and see what others have gone through after crocheting multiple times

Welcome. NEVER palm roll. Palm rolling only does 1 of 2 things. If you do it sparingly, it doesn't do anything to create lasting knots. If you do it enough to see progress, it will severely destroy your locks. Possibly irrevocably. It's not worth the risk.

And you never need to maintain your locks, no matter what the age. The point of dreadlocks is that they maintain themselves. What do you think will need to be done later on?
