I love my dreads!!!

Dread Maintenance

I had my dreads "done" by the crochet method in June and yes I did crochet to blunt my ends only because I like them that way. I have no problem with them drying, so I'm satisfied with my descion. I have left them alone only using bc and ac rinse with sea salt spray every third day and they are becoming so beautiful!

I had complained about the crazy loops and bumps and loss of length but I popped some beads on the unmanageable ones and I'm good to go.

I was told the other night that my dreads were incredibly sexy....wow :) one hell of a compliment.

One thing I will say is that for the first time I used dish soap to wash them. I was appalled with how dark and dirty the water was that came out of them. I rinsed a few times very well to make sure all the soap was out. I thought that bc and ac rinse was the best to get out all dirt.... I think I'm going to do the dish soap at least once a month to give them a through cleansing. Oh, and they smell so freaking fresh now!!!

Loopies Forever?

Dread Maintenance

I dont mind them, other than the fact that my hair is getting shorter! My boss did ask me if there was something I could do to make it look better. I just resorted to wearing it up while at work and it seems to be just fine with them (I work for the school district here :)

Thank you so much for the replies.... I had a feeling it would be just a "sucked in" thing!

Loopies Forever?

Dread Maintenance

I love my dreadies but the loopies are killing me! I have read the posts about said loopies but I have yet to see anything about them relaxing or are they there forever. How about ways to loosen them or at least make them look a bit... not so kinky?

I see many pictures on here with practically poker straight dreads and I also hear that just about everyone got the kinkies during the first year. So..... any help to answer these questions?

Also.... I know I should just embrace the kinkies and move on, and I would but I do have a job that requires me to keep tidy hair.

Oh, and six months of palm rolling experience tells me it doesn't do shit ;)

Method With Most Shrinkage?

Dreading Methods

Just curious about which dreading method would/could cause the most initial shrinkage. I have seen many posts about shrinkage but haven't been ambitious enough to check info page to see what method used.I would think that backcombing would have the most shrinkage and true neglect would have the least. What are your experiences?Silly me had mine lightly backcombed then crocheted and I haven't had any shrinkage, btw mine are recovering quite nicely after following SE advice. Most of them are fluffy and soft and I finally love my hair :)

How I removed wax from my dreads:

Saved Dreads Success Stories

Yay!!!Before I locked my hair I actually used dread wax on my straight hair as a way of "dirtying" it up. Squeaky clean hair fine straight hair just doesn't style... I would only use a tiny bit near the roots and the shit would stay in for days after washing. That totally turned me off of using it when I did dread my hair, why would I want dirty stuff to stay in my locked up hair?I'm glad you found a way to de-gunk yours :)Any photos?

Where did your get yours?

Dread Accessories

About beads... Almost every town now has some sort of bead shop. I stop at any I see and search for ones with holes big enough for my hair, usually find at least one per place. I just picked up two today, hand "blown" glass and so unique :) Seek and you will find!Good luck!

Partings

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

Yes!Mine started with a middle part and it looked stupid. After my first washing I draped them to one side creating a side part and bobby pinned them in place. After the next washing I pinned them on the other side, next time I pinned them straight back. I repeated this until they just decided to lie back on their own.... Which was today!!I wish you the best of luck :)Oh, if you wear a hat/tam, pull the front back when you wear it. Not sure if this actually works but my mind tells me it does.

Will my crochet'd dreads and all those really long loose hairs come together some day? Or should I just cut em off and start over?

Dread Maintenance

I had mine started by crochet on June 14th (2011) and after using standard conditioner a week ago to loosen them up (which it did) I had tons of loose hairs. Since then I have been washing every other day with SE baking soda wash recipe and using salt spray once a day in the morning. Sorry SE, I do palm roll gently after the spray and blow dry it on low!My loose pieces are coming together and the ends that came loose have started to lock... albeit, very gently. This is what is working for me so far and I am finally feeling comfortable with the way they look :)Try this and see, although everyone has hair that reacts differently.

Out damned jojoba oil!!!!!

Dread Maintenance

Yeah, well I'm sure I've got the cleanest hair in town :)It does feel much better now. I'm going to give the washing a break for the rest of the day and see how it is once it dries completely. I'm sure it will be fine :)It would be nice if anyone suggests oil to give an approximate amount. Or maybe they did I didn't pay attention.
