Welcome. While Back combing is not the worst method of starting locks. It is, by far, the most damaging of the starter methods. To get started, you have to put an enormous amount of torque on your hair and scalp to get the tangling started. This rips out tons of hairs and will thin out your locks before they start healing and getting thicker.
The TnR method is much gentler and easier to do too. You don't rip out nearly as many hairs, and you don't end up with some locks sticking out in all directions for a while.
Check out the methods and recovery forums to see how others feel about their progress with either method, too. I used both on various locks. And the ones I TnR'd are much healthier and natural feeling
