I'm a 17 male and my hair is thick and straight.I've read the whole dread guide but i was wondering if soaringeagle or someone else can tell me pretty detailed on how to start my dreads from the very beginning. I want to do the twist and rip method because I want the dreads pretty neat. I have really straight hair so is there anything special I need to do? also what is the best maintainace to keep them from smelling and stay clean. I would appreciate it a lot if someone could help. thanks!

They will tidy themselves up over time. But that is at least a year away. For the first while, they will be a mess of tangles. In time loose hairs get sucked in.

I agree with what was already said. I would add, don't try to make perfect sections. Make a mix of big and small sections. Also, you don't have to TnR them too tightly. Actually, fairly loose is better, so they can come apart and re-knot properly where they need to. Just wash and separate. Again, 1 square inch is the biggest you want them to get at the scalp.

She's right, they won't be neat. Maybe at the very beginning, but it's short lived. Twist and rip doesn't form dreads, it helps create sections. Most will come undone anywhere from a week to a month after you do them. Then they'll start to reknot and dread up the way they want to.There's no one way to keep them clean, what works for me might not work for you. It will all depend on how your skin reacts to thing. A lot of people have a lot of success with the dreadlockshampoo.com liquids and bars, but my skin doesn't like them. I have to use baking soda/apple cider vinegar rinses instead. It's trial and error for all of us, finding what works and what doesn't.

If you want to start forming babies with twist and rip all you have to do is take your hair in sections no more then and inch squared and then preform the twist and rip and repeat however many you would like to have on your head. All you have to do to keep them clean is wash 3-4 times a week. But note this. No dread "hairstyle" will ever be neat. So don't expect them to behave they way you want them too. Because my friend you will be very dissappointed
