I'm sorry I'm just now picking this up! Not to worry. Sounds like it's time for you to try a nice baking soda and apple cider vinegar rinse. They're a perfect, natural way to get the build-up out of your locks and a wonderful way to freshen your scalp and dreads. Thankfully, I haven't had build-up issues over all of these years -- I think this has been due in large part to sticking with natural products, especially steering clear of waxes and "hard gels" when twisting my new growth and doing general maintenance. Here's a recipe I've used for my dreads as well as busting build-up from my friends' locks:

  • In a small bowl, add a few tablespoons of baking soda to a couple cups of water -- what you're looking to do here is make a simple paste you can spread on your locks/scalp with the build-up (some folks like to use more, others less)
  • When you've finished applying the paste, use a pitcher of warm water to pour over your head and the areas you applied the paste. I like to do this over a sink, but some friends have done it while kneeling over their bathtubs. Keep rinsing with the water until the baking soda has been rinsed from your dreads and always take care not to get any in your eyes.
  • For the Apple Cider Vinegar rinse, I use the ratio of 2 tablespoons of vinegar to 1 cup of water in a bowl (sometimes I'll make a larger batch, but always be mindful of how much you're using -- overdoing it can sometimes irritate the skin) -- then just plop the dreads with the build-up into the bowl and swish them around. Make sure they're thoroughly saturated. When you're ready, use the pitcher again to rinse with clean water or jump in the shower. When you're finished with both rinses you should really see improvement in the build-up. I've seen great results on friends suffering with extreme lint and "hard gel" flakes. I love doing them every few months to have a refreshing treat. Let me know how it goes x0x
