Not washing often is a myth. Who knows how it started but not true at all....

Hi Kim, welcome to the community for healthy dreadlocks. I see you don't wash often, dreads mature quicker when clean, so wash 2-3 times a week. Use a dread friendly shampoo or the baking soda wash. With the baking soda wash, it is recommended to rinse with apple cider vinegar, but I think I read that you have oily hair and scalp, so you would not have to use the apple cider vinegar after EVERY wash with baking soda, so keep that in mind when other members recommend it to you.

Your profile does not say where you live, so I can only tell you that if you have hard water in your area, many dread shampoos and bars will not work properly for you, they will leave behind a residue, if you have soft water, there are many to choose from. I will attach a map below for the States just in case that is where you live. I have a map for Canada if you need that.

Hair also mats from sleeping on it, especially at the back of the head. You should keep up on separating it, the longer it sits, the harder it is to separate the sections. Best to do it with wet hair, the hair is stronger then and can take more pulling without causing damage. Just grab two joining sections and slowly pull apart up towards the scalp, leave a little webbing at the scalp area. If you need to separate the back of the head often, then do so, as often as needed..... Read the dreaducation section at the top of this site for many tips to help you along the way. Enjoy your journey.....peace

Hi Kim, welcome :) if your hair's getting all matted together, try to separate them more often. Not all the time, just enough so you can separate them without it being painful. Once the dreads start maturing more, you won't have to separate quite as much. I can go a month and only two or three will need separating now lol.
