hand rolling does absolutely nothing but excersize your arms and can cause  significant harm if done alot

the roots dread themselves but will always have loose hairs waiting to dread (waiting to be long enough todread)

in featured discussions read your rights to wear dreads in the workplace explained

when you tie your shoes  don't you slip  the shoestrings through loops? looping is  how they dread, ok now imaging all your hairs are straight parallel and all the same length, a breeze blows and  causes some to criss cross over and   a few hairs loop through eachother, that's your 1st tangle  more join in as the hairs not even and  orderly but going every which way

loops form and more hairs get caught in those loops .trapped

then you sleep on them and the loops compress  and tighten into  tight ropes

when mature almost all loops will be sucked in and compressed

looping is an essential part of the dreading process

as for the soap it depends on hair type www.dreadlockshampoo.com is most highly recommended

black soaps probably ok in African type hair

you do not have to backcomb anything just stop wearing it up so much let it hang loose and move and it will dread
