I am such a noobie*

Introduce Yourself

Hello :) Well let me begin by saying any hair type is capable of dreading. ! If you don't want to do the natural dreading method ( which is just stop combing ), you can do the twist and rip !! It's less damaging then backcombing and keeps your length. The ' dreaducation ' tab tells you how to do the method and its extremely helpful !! I saw that you asked in the chat if you should not wash your hair...definetly wash your hair ! Hair dreads when it is clean. And once your dreads are in, you can wash anytime you need to. Don't put any products in your hair !! Thats a good tip. No wax or anything like that. For shampoo and washing your dreads, make sure it is a residue free shampoo or soap :):) No conditioner.Dr.Bronners is very good and organic or you can use a baking soda wash lol ! Ahahaha sorry im just spitting out any information that comes to my mind. Uhmm what else...it'sbest not to use any methods like crocheting or palmrolling because they are very damaging !Natural is always best.Thats really about it !IfI missed anythingImsure someone will tell you.Just let them do their own thing & and document the journey. Have fun girl :) Hope this helped.

How do I tell my parents?

Life Issues Facing Dreads

Hello hannah :) I came here to originally offer some advice but it seems likeeverything worked out :)Im glad !! My mom and one of my brothers reactions were just that they are dirty and well every other dread stereotype ! But once youexplain tothem what dreads really are and how they are exactly the opposite of most stereotypes, mine didn't really mind. My dad also thinks im just trying to look "black" ahaha . What I love to hear is that you are doing them and you dont care what people. I wish I would have done that earlier !! I wanted dreads since I was in like gr8 but never got them. Finally, after I graduated from high school I dreaded my hair. Good luck on your dread journey my dear :):)

Peace and love.

people can surprise you sometimes. I wish I were as lucky as you. My mom still hates mine. It's been years. My dad still thinks the only reason I have them is to "look black"

Very true taye ! Imjust really not used to strangers blatantly asking me if my hair is dirty ahaha. Oh well. The best thing to do is just be polite andtrytoeducatethem :) Thank you for the reply :)

I don't even notice people looking at me. It is outside of me, has nothing to do with me. If they have a judgement or an issue.....it belongs to them. If someone asks me if I wash my hair...I say..."sure I do, do you?" If someone is asking questions because they have baby dreads or are interested in starting, I will take the time to explain how I do it or answer any other question they may have. Most people who have a negative comment...keep it to themselves ( or whisper to each other). I do get a lot of random people saying "I like your dreads", and lots of comments involving Bob Marley.

But the point is....the only thing that someone else says or does...is on them...not me. The only thing that can effect you is what you let in.

Well that is quite the outfit aha !! I'm going to go with that attitude. Bring on the stares & comments !! Thank you for the reply Hayley :):)

I've gotten a few stares and in my first week a woman at Starbucks couldn't fathom why I live without a hair brush but it doesn't really bother me. I'm used to it and have been for years. Not a week goes by that I don't get asked "did you dress yourself in the dark?" at least once. I've never been very good at color or pattern matching so I gave up and started wearing whatever tickles my fancy (yesterday was a grey hoodie, green shorts, purple argyle tube socks, and orange and yellow sneakers) and my hair is no different. I used to rarely style or do anything with my hair and now I'm doing nothing at all and it's great lol. Bring on the stares and comments!

Hahaha, a lot of good points. But why must there be something defined as " the norm " ? What is normal ? Conformity is an interesting topic.I just feel like it takes a great deal of effort to pretend or try being somebody you're not aha.But I guess if ones happy thats all that matters right :)Thank you for this reply soaring eagle. I like the way you bring things into a different light. Interesting story, but do you mind me asking whatexactlythe gathering is ?

conformity is a fear of being judged .. a fear of standing out being different ..looked at as weird

do people all want to look and act the same? no but they do it to fit in to the group thet=y want to belong to

lok at the trust fund kid who tries to act all gangsta and gheto they just want to fit in somewhere without being judged for being a stuck up rich kid..so they conform to the norm for the social group they choose to be a part of

imagine a world withoit conformity where every person was spedial and unique colorful and crazy it would be a beautiful place but im sure several times a day youd think..god that guy was weird

in rainbowland you dont think anything strange about a guy with a tree bark beard or wearing ferns as a skirt or a boot as a hat..we are used to non conformity and uniqueness..and non judgmentalnes

but strill every so often u see someone gos appearance or behaviors (more often behavior soince appearance dont matter) is so off the wall u just think wtf is up with that guy

funny storry ';

last gathering tis guys walking out to the road with us and just repeating stuff over and over very loudly rasta rasta rasta buddha buddhabuddha allah allah allah and so on but other "ranty" stuff that made no sense si i asked him if he took anything today he replied with more repetetive weirdness so then i asked if hes suposed to be on meds..no reply so then i say sorry to ask this but have you ever been diagnosedwith schitsophrenia

he stops looks me right in the eye and says "i donrt believe in religions like that"

then went on with his rant..wich aparently had lasted for days

anyway

i think theres a point in there..maybe its that although non conformity breeeds a beauty a freedom a life without limmits it also erases the lines that your suposed to fear crossing

i mean u ever see ppl so outragiosly out of touch they walk down the strret and tgeres a crowd folowijng them laughing?

like if a jugalo went to a funeral wearing clown makeup..your suposed to have some sense of whats not appropruiTe but still have your own individuality and uniqueness

Having an opinion is fine. But I think one should go about asking in a different way. I have no problem answering questions out of curiosity, but I dont particularly enjoy being lectured by strangers either. Especially if it's something they don't understand or understand you know ? Aha, its something im just not used to. With time, I think I'll get used to answering peoples questions :) Thank you for the reply. :):)

I don't mind. People have different opinions, and though I don't see the point in thinking your opinion is right and another's is wrong, that's just how it is for a lot of people. Nothing you can do about it. I don't get offended by people asking if I wash my hair though; a lot of people believe in those misconceptions about dreads and ask out of curiosity rather than anything malicious. Just educate people and ignore those who are stuck in their ways.

As for conformity...that just makes life easier for people, to know that everyone is the same as them.
