My Experience with African hair, Twist and Neglect (Two Strand Twist)

Dreading Methods

I twisted my hair once and did two strand twist

Im 5 months in and what I noticed is:

My hair didn't start looking like dreads till 3-3.5 months. It would have that spiral look but get fuzzy

A good number of dreads will have a zig-zag shape to them

Right now (at 5 months ) I noticed that as they grow, the roots are a little loose (which is normal) and don't have that spiral shape but the ends of a lot them still have that spiral shape w/ fuzz/frizz.

A lot of my dreads doesn't lie down even after they are 4-5 inches long. (unless my hair is wet)

*I wash my hair 3-4 times a week with baking soda wash with 10 drops of tea tree oil and 20-30 drops of rosemary. (People say my hair smells like pine) and apple cider vinegar rinse. I dry my hair with the sun

Introduce Yourself

Technically I'm not new because I joined the site back in July last year and that was when I had 3 inches of hair and wondering how I should start.

I got dreadlocks for a number of reasons:

It is a way to free yourself from always being concerned about "looking good" Our beauty is not defined by our physical looks alone, but our hearts(passion) and souls(personality). Beautiful things God gave us.

I got tired of spending $12 every two weeks to cut my hair. That was February 2012 when I got my last hair cut.

Started growing an afro (I have hair straight from Africa: super curly/kinky) till November 2012 where it was 4.5in long (The plan was to wait till January 2013 so it was 6in but got impatient because maintaining an afro is super annoying. Always have to pick your hair out every hour and buy all these conditioners)

I had my cousin twist my hair with a light locking gel and after that I just let my hair do what it wants. She did two strand twist (I looked like Roger from Sister Sister the first day lol.)

Since african hair naturally defies gravity, my dreads haven't lied down yet (except when I wash my hair)

It's been 5 months. They're about 5inches on top, 3.5 inches in the side and 4 inches at the back. (My hair is stupid and doesn't grow even all around. My afro looked stupid...)

The plan is to never cut my hair again :)

What Up?

Introduce Yourself

I've always wanted to have dreadlocks but never knew how to go at it till I found this site. I got tired of cutting my hair every two weeksjust cause somepeople think it wont look good any other way.

Been debating if i should twist my hair or just freeform from the get go and decided to do it natural. I want a hairstyle thatdefines and is unique too me.I have 1.5 - 2 inch kinky afro hair. Been hearing it has to be 3inches off the head before you can do anything. Is this true?
