Questions

Dread Maintenance

I posted before but I'm still a bit confused so I thought I'd ask a few more questions about my dreads.

I've had them for over a week now and they look insane. Some are dreading up pretty nicely but I have a crapload of loose hairs and loose hairs in the front that keeps licking my face and it's very frustrating. Should I do something about the loose hairs?

Should I do anymaintenanceat all? I get that I shouldn't use any wax or abuse my hair in any way but the thing with loose hairs and stuff bugs me. Especially the ones that keeps falling in my face.

And one last thing. How often should I shower? Is there something I should think about when showering so I don't screw something up? I have a shampoo with no crap in it, it's completely natural. I've been really resistant of showering after the two other times when my hair completelycollapsed, so I haven't showered in almost a week now (the hair, not the body). Should I keep resisting to shower my hair for a bit longer or should I shower? The hair feels a bit oily at the moment and my scalp kind of itches so I was thinking that it might be bad for the dreading process.

I've also heard that showering in cooler water is better than warm, is that true?

Sorry for asking so much in one thread.

Hello, I'm new! To both the forum and dreads..

Introduce Yourself

Hey!

I joined the forum mainly to read up on what people think and such. I noticed there can be a lot of arguing about it, haha.. Personally, I just like reading up on people's experiences and such to make up my own, I don't care much about arguing about such things.

The reason I got dreads was mainly because I like to try new things. I've had a lot of different hair styles just to find what works best for me. I've been putting off the whole idea of dreads for a while because it's a commitment, for sure. I finally decided to get them now cause getting proper dreads is a long term goal, right? I have a lot of goals and stuff I want to achieve (trying to become an conceptual artist in the game and movie industry, suiting for dreads I suppose?) and I'm in this weird place in my life at the moment where I really try to strive for these things so getting dreads now felt like the perfect timing.

Also dreads looks awesome!

I read up and watched a lot of videos before I started but I was still pretty clueless. But me and a friend sectioned up my hair and started backcombing them and I have silicon bands in my hair to have an easier timeseparatingthem (the type of bands they have for horse hair, I'm planning on getting beads as soon as possible).

I decided not to care so much what happens to the dreads after fighting them for 4 days. I'm just going to keep them separated from each other and let them do their thing. I'm not going completely neglect cause, with all due respect, I don't like the look of them. I want to have at least some control of my dreads. I don't want any congos and such.

Any good started tips or whatever, is very welcomed :D

Aight, cool. I'll take the rubberbands out.

Will loose hairs eventually tangle up with the dreads or should that be maintained in some way?

Will the sections be "screwed up" if I take out the rubberbands and let them do their thing, though?

Cause I don't want to go completely neglect. I understand that the hair needs to do their own locking process, I just want to have some control on what's going on. Just like you said about "direction", I don't want that direction to be lost if I remove the rubberbands and let them go crazy.

I think it would. But I'm not entirely sure because the first time I showered, it did fall apart from the pressure I think. But the second time I used a pantyhose (lol) to keep them sort of protected but that didn't help at all.

Ok let me explain the rubberband thing.

They're not at the roots, they are in about the middle of the hair. They are also not made out of rubber, I just said rubber since it was easy to explain. It's made out of silicon, they use these to put into horse hairs. They don't rip or get sticky in the shower or anything. These; http://www.fasttackdirect.co.uk/product-4-38-15035/Rhinegold_Super_...

No disrespect, just saying.

Edit: However, I will consider getting beads if I can find any around, of course. That sounds better.

The rubberbands are not tight by any means. I just keep them in there to keep the dreadsseparated. I move them from time to time too so they don't get stuck. They slide around easily.

Thanks guys! I will stop re-backcombing even if they fall apart.

I have rubberbands at the roots though, I hope that isn't a problem? I don't want them to grow together and have any of those con-goes or what they're called :(

To answer soaring eagle; I didn't have a showercap so I tried using a stocking.. soridiculous! Didn't work any better than showering without. As for drying, the first time I squeezed out the water gently with a towel and blowdried them carefully, although the dreads already fell apart before they dried. The second time I used the stocking, they still fell apart and I blowdried them again.

I've heard mixed opinions about blowdrying but I don't want to walk around with super wet dreads all day. But maybe I should? I don't know!

Anyway thanks for the tips, people!

Dreads falls apart when shower.. but I have to shower!

Dread Maintenance

Ok guys, here's the dealio.

I work at Ikea and it's super hot and hard work at the dishes. Which is the place I work basically all the time. It ends up with me having to shower when I get home. But when I do shower, my dreads fall to mush and needs to be re-backcombed.

They're only 4 days old (young..) and I've been scared shitless to use wax because of all the talk of it getting stuck in your hair and unable to wash off.

So what do I do? Go around smelling bad, shower and go through a month of no free time and just backcombing.. or do I use wax.. or whatelse?

Ideas?
