Yes I am too young to be a grandmother!

Introduce Yourself

I gave up brushing and am just letting it go! I have always known I was destined to have dreads...my hair is perfect for it...as soon as I figure out how to post a picture I will.. Because other than not brushing I am not sure if I really need to do much more...but would love any/all advice...I have coarse super thick curly hair that is colored but a nice mix of blonde and what is left of my natural red...I want to keep this color...is there a problem with coloring the roots?...I am half earth mama but love hair colors and do NOT want to submit to grey/whtie yet...any advise with hair color? My hair grow just under an inch every six weeks... I do not plan to cut or brush it ever again...but I want to keep this color...right now my hair hits just below my shoulders...just a week and a half of no brushing and washing with some dilute BonnersIt is staring to find its groove and already I love it!I will go back to reading posts now because I do not want to ask something already addressed...but I would like to know what else I can do to keep it and me scalp healthy and grow some really nice locks...I work in a field for a company where this will be unusual but not a shock...I have not told but a few folks because my hair has always been clean but a mess so the transition will not be really noticed! Thanks for being here and I look forwrd to the journey

dread Wax: Lesson learned. Not even ONCE. *updated with promised photo*

Dread Maintenance

I remember the first video I looked at showing how to put dreads in (or whatever you want to call those waxy yukky sausages that hang from peoples heads) having folks who lived in the islands for 20 years I know that dreadlocks have to just form ..they can be ripped and shapped a bit but not with "product"

anyway I watched that video and this guys hair was ruined by the globs of wax she put on after backcombing ..I was stunned and thought "where the hell does the dirt go but into those sticky things?"

really I can only imagine how gross it would be to play with my husbands hair and have my fingers get stuck in the disgusting mess this could become

and it is not like they apply a little bit ..oh know she was gobbing it on like shaving cream

yuk

I am glad I found this site ..I did know I was going natural because to me there is absolutely no point at this point in my life to do anything else ..dreads should happen ...not be forced in my opinion

but boy oh boy have I gotten some good tips here so thanks

phatties or skinny dreads?

Thank you so very much this is helpful!

I've got 23 dtips and 12 roots. The roots are obviously super thick. The best way to dry them, I explained earlier. Squeeze the hell out of them. Take 4-5 at a time and start at the root and twist the water out as if you're squeezing the water out of a towel. go to the next 4-5 and so on till you did them all. Then start again. o this 2 to 3 times till they aren't dripping, and if you do it right, the should be dry to the touch. Hit them with a blow drier for a few minutes after that. Sometimes I'd even squeeze them again with a towel to absorb even more water. Once in a while in the winter I'd even lean my head forward, drape a towel over them, and blow dry using the towel as a backdrop. They'll still be a little damp on the inside for a few hours, but every so often hit them with the blow drier again. due to gravity water will keep moving down to the tips as they hang. Periodically squeeze the tips to get any excess water out that tries to drain. If there's still a bunch of water in the tips, squeeze it out and hit with a drier once more.

It's a little tedious to dry locks this fat, but it works, and I've never had a problem with mold or anything

phatties or skinny dreads?

Dreadlock Styles and Dread Styling

How do you get the fat ones to dry to the core? I am seven mothes in love all the shapes and sizes but the fatties take almost 24. Hours to dry ( granted it is winter so the fresh air is to darn cold
Yes you have beautiful hair!
I think some get really fat. From the fect we loose hair naturally every day and it weaves into the loc don't you?
Ps mold hates acid so if this has not been mentioned ( I appologise if I am repeating at work and can not read the whole thread)
Rinsing with cider vinegar and water is te best way I can imagine to keep the mold out of locs

Yes vinegar rinse is great for dandruff I rec that to my patients all the time that and a good rinse with black tea ( tanic acid) but if your hair is damaged colored or absorbs color easily skip the tea

veggie vegan omni ital? whats your diet and hows it relate to your dreadiness (if at all)

Dreads and Diets

I eat a mainly plant based diet from our garden ..I have turned all the landscaping into either really pretty fragrent flowers for the bees butterflies and birds or edibles...

I do eat meat about 2-3 times weekly but it is either from my own flock or from a friend who raises and butchers humanly

I was a veg for almost 20 years but really became grossly anemic ..after trying everything veg I could do to correct it ...I opted to encoporate meat into my diet but with some pretty simple rules ..humane raised humane butchering

I was never an "ethical" vegetarian and do believe that human beings should eat a wide variety of food to suit their particular health and stature

I am an ethical ominvore and very particular about how my food is raised and so that limits my consumption naturally \

fortunately I live in an area where I can do this with some affordablity or I would just be eating beans and rice

(I grow beans but have to buy rice!)

alsoI do a fast once in a while to remind myself how much I really do not need ..and in spite of a tragic few years...all that I have ..since I am not a theist ...I do not have any religious or spiritual reasons for my diet ..they are all health and environmental reasons

I hate the way animals are treated in the "industry" so I refuse to eat meat unless I have seen it's life first.
