Just heard what I feel is probably the most horrifying thing ever!
General Talk
when i first got mine my friend who did them for me (back combing) burnt the edges and some fuzzies with a lighter. smelt sooo bad! and didn't work!
Sorry to hear about your hair! I'm the same as you with my dreads, I went for the slightly more "manicured" look and am still using the bands nearly 3 years on, never had any problems.
Good luck with your next set!

But the thing is it didn't just loosen it completely shifted back to a fro with no distinction save a few lumpy bits in the back I realize that my act of shaving was a bit over board but at least it gives me time to reflect and research before I decide to re-do. Natural neglect is definately not the route I'd like to take I will admit that I'm going for a much more commercial look to them but that's the way that I like them. It seemed different the first time I had dreads because my hair was so long and by memory so much easier. Maybe the patience of waiting for my hair to grow back will help my patience to allow natural locking

Miko said:Yea I know but is frustrating. They were doing fine and holding for great with the loose wrapped elastics but everybody keeps saying that they would ruin my dreads and just now I was talking to a my sis new bf and he still has his original elastics On his from 9 months ago with great results

Serves the same purpose as a bead.

I had thought the point of this site was to help people get the kind of dreads THEY choose, be they neglect or not. But maybe I'm wrong?

I've used elastics at the roots for >2.5 years with my dreads with no ill-effects. Make sure they're on loose enough that they can move up and down freely and this will allow enough hair movement to knot up. It just becomes part of your maintenence to go through and replace them when needed.
Never attached pics before so sorry if it's huge! I'm a bit nervous about the bleach damaging them too but I make sure they're rinsed very thoroughly. On the downside it does make them quite dry for a week or so after, can you recommend anything to soften them up a bit? If you fancy lighter dreads you could try lemon juice? I know it works for "normal" hair so I don't see why it wouldn't for dreads!
Yup, when my hair was being dreaded the bands were in to hold them in their sections and since then I've found that they keep the dreads nicely seperated and actually help them dread - sometimesI miss it when one comes out and the dread has quite a bit of straight growth at the roots.
Sorry to hijack the thread!
When I first got my dreads I didn't have the bands at the roots and they started to dread together leading to verypainful seperating. I've found that keeping the bands reasonably loose (so they can still be moved easily up and down) the hair dreads neatly and tightly.
Definitely to each their own but I felt I should share my good experience with them!
