Hi, I'm 63 and sound like we landed in the same place: conservative employer and now unemployed. Don't worry you get used to odd looks and they are just that, odd looks. Defeating some ones notions are stimulating. I some times wear a hat but often do not. I started with twist and rip but pulled them all out and am going natural. Curly hair helps but I'm looking at a long time until they turn into something besides a birds nest. (Owl attacks are know to happen) My kids are getting used to it and so are most of the local cops and merchants. It was a lifetime of short hair and smiling but now with the long and messy hair I can glower. Refreshing. The alternative would be a mohawk and that really scares 'em. Good luck and persevere.
