the opinion of others, who matter...

Introduce Yourself

Sancho! Can totally relate, like Rebekah. Several months ago when I told my husband I'd had three dreams in a row that I had dreadlocs and wanted to do it, he simply stated, "I really don't like them". He never said, "it's them or me", but it was still hard cuz certainly I hoped for his support. I ended up doing it anyway, and less than three months in he actually loves them, even though they are in a truly crazy phase! He is respectful and kind and likes to touch their funny textures and says they smell so good! So, maybe, just maybe things will smooth out on your end! I had a conversation with my guy about why he didn't like them, and it turns out his "opinions" were based solely on speculation and rumors! I wish you well ...

I started mine the same way. I love them. Mine went through the loop stage too, big time. They have settled down a bit. Tightening up also. Your look really nice. peace

Thanks so much! I actually just tried one ... found the one that had the least loops and bumps (this one only had one!) and it split super easy ... right up to where the bump was ... then it was "balls to the walls, mach II with my hair on fire" not going anywhere!! I ended up using scissors to gently make a little slice at the bump, then continued to pull and split (still super difficult). Eventually it split the rest of the way, although where I made a little slice it came apart kind of funny. Since the rest of mine are super lumpy and bumpy and loopy, I'm not sure ... although it's hard to imagine that it will get any easier as time goes on! I'll keep playing and let you know what happens!!! Thanks again for your advice!!! ;)

Thanks Dolly, you are too kind! :-)

I'm finding that the split ones are re-dreading... it's been a couple months and many of the new skinny ones are resettling and starting to squiggle & zigzag up (they were totally straight & smooth when thick). So maybe splitting yours now would be good, since the rest of your hair is still going through the initial locking process anyway? You might also lose less hairs by doing it now, since your knots aren't totally mature yet. Maybe try one and see how it goes?

Thanks again! Just went through your pictures ... your locs are such a huge inspiration! I love reading the responses you have for people's questions too ... you're so helpful and wise! ;) Was reading about splitting locs and was thinking about splitting a few of mine ... I, like you, prefer a greater number of thinner ones. Thought that was what I was doing when we sectioned, but didn't find out until later that the section size is what determines the end result loc size! Anyway, do you think it's easier to split them at the stage I'm at (3 months, super loopy and bumpy!) or wait until they mature? It seems like it'd be easier now, but wanted to get your feedback and thoughts! Thanks so much!!!

i grabbed the hair randomly as it had naturally sectioned. i had about 65 but now i think i'm down to about twenty because the majority of them fell out completely. not surprising though because my hair is so darn soft. i'm just going to leave them alone and see what happens now. i'll take pics soon:)

Oh, Heather ... I'm so excited to see what a little help might do for you! I hope you're feeling great about your decision! Nothing wrong with helping nature here and there, right? ;) You've been pretty darn patient, for sure! If you're already seeing loops and such, it seems like a good sign that you made a great choice!!! Please do post some pics so we can see the progress!!!! How many sections did you end up with?

Heather said:
well, i haven't really announced it on here but i kind of helped my hair along a little backcombing and t&r. almost 4 months of waiting for my hair to dread and it really wasn't doing anything. we'll see how it goes now. its only been a week and a half and already some of the sections are looping. crazy.
