Loose Roots

I am only about a month into the process and I can already tell that the roots are growing out, and seeing as my hair is naturally straight as can be I feel like if i just leave it that they will just keep growing and not knot up. I know that people say not to root flipp them, what else can I do myself to promote locking in the roots?

I have recently started my dreads(less than a month old!!) and noticed my scalp is starting to get flakey and itchy(to be expected from everything i hear) but i was wondering what anyone uses to help with this at all?? I have a friend who says that they have certain oils out there that help? what do ya'll use??
