Washing advice needed for flake-ridden fool.

Dread Maintenance

WOO HOO!!!!! so glad to hear about the sudden success brother!!! way to go man - doesnt that rinse feel friggin awesome????Lemongrass has a nice clean scent...as does lemon bee balmi use lavender, sometimes sage and rosemary as well...cloves...basil...spearmintu may just wanna stick with the teatree for awhile though before adding anything new in to your hair. sounds like a deep cleaning was very necessary...make sure whenever you do put something in your hair that it has been dilluted a bit first. i know some people have allergic reactions to vinegar, and also to teatree when it is full strength..cheers!

Wow! That felt great, if not only just to have had my head directly under the shower head for the first time in 7 years!! And we have an awesome shower that I've never been able to fire right on my scalp.

There no flakes at all at the moment, but the front area has started to appear slightly cracked again. As we dried me off, myself and my washing companion both commented on how it only looked sunburnt now, and then saw your comment, Eva.

I had thought of that before, but didn't want to get carried away with wishful thinking. I didn't manage to get hold of any Aloe Vera today but do have some Aloe Vera moisturiser which I may pop a small amount of.

I also set the waxiest, hardest dreads in a large bowl of boiled water to get a start on breaking those down a bit. They went so soft in the water it was obvious the wax was softening, and a fair bit of wax came out, mainly only from the ends of the dreads, bringing a bit of hair with it. When dry, these clumps were worryingly dusty and full of sediment. Although, not quite as disturbing as the colour of the water running off my hair, we rinsed over the bath with the plug in and watched the brown water collect as the baking soda rinse did its thing.

Wringing the dreads out in the shower for the second rinse had a khaki coloured milkshake oozing out, and then rinsing after a short vinegar soak this milky bi-product was almost clear in parts.

Bloody good to see this progress already, still a long way to go, but I can certainly get used to this peppermint cloud following me round. What other oils are recommended for a fresh & fruity post-wash smell?

Also - it is possible your scalp just got some sunburn and thats why it is flaking so bad up front..I totally reccommend the baking soda/applevinegar wash everyone else is raving about...My dreads are new but anytime i have issues with scalp i give em a good rinse and it takes care of the issue ASAP.

they're under a year old - so newborns, really...thanks for the tip - i'll keep a close eye on the situation and be sure to notice if my hairs turn cannibalistic...maybe if i keep them fed they won't resort to consuming all my personal effects? Lex said:
how old are your locks? the only potentially dangerous thing about wraps is the fact that your hair may decide to swallow them up and never let them go.

My wild imagination took me on a trip - and told me a dirty rumour that as the Binding Agent, be it hemp, or plant, or sinew, naturally decomposes over time, the rotted material would get sucked inside the dreddie and thus fester away in to some new and strange life of its own...some alienistic microbial creature with a stinky ass, perhaps... *shrieks*but yes :) i've left the vast majority of mi dreds un-blunted, and un-tethered to dry after washins...nothin to fear but fear itself!thanks for the response! Hmmm... They might take longer to dry, but... Promote bacteria? ... Never thought of that!
I've had hair wraps in my hair for a while, and never had problems. Also, I've seen one I made on a friends dread last all summer. He had no problem at all with it :)
Just be sure to not tie your hair up when it's wet (takes longer to dry). That should do the trick!
I wish you luck!

I'm new here - and excited about the Journey we all share :)I've done a combination of things to start my locks - you can read about that in other areas of the forum, on on my blog.I have a question -Concerning wraps and beads, etc.I have some tings I'd like to start hanging from my hair.I was planning on using fibers from my yucca plants to weave thru my locks. or sinew i have collected. The question is..Do hair wraps promote growth of bacteria inside locks? Is it bad to leave bindings on ya hair for a long time?Cheers!-eVa

You are a lovely writer. :)

I love the term elf locks. I have no aversion to the term dread locks but elf locks just sound so enchanting.

Thank you for making me smile tonight.

ahh hahaha - I know, right!?!?! i love his specs also!!! so awesome...and hey, you know you can make your own Sea Salt spritz, right??Sometimes I'll take a bath and dump either a whole bunch of epsom salts, or sea salt in and just Soak Soak Soak my body and mind and hair...it is good for you, for sure...No substitute for a MOVING body of water, but we do what we can, right??I prefer to um...manuever my hair when it is dry..i can't explain why. My mom told me since a young age that it damages hair to brush it while its wet. but i guess when there is RIPPING to be done - who cares!?!?!I salute you.Cheers, Best Beloved. tatyananashi said:
Cool story. I haven't had a chance to dip in the ocean since starting my dreads but I have swam in our pool and every time I got out my hair was congoing a bunch, I always try to rip it when wet becuase it comes apart better but I get paranoid about the sound- it sounds so loud when it's so close to your head. :P Those glasses on Toto are awesome.
