sorry for the ignorance but...I have some need to knows

Introduce Yourself

Your hair sounds about the same as mine before i had dreads, and i can tell you if its anything like mine stop combing for about 3-4 days and you have the start of dreads in your hair already. I crochet most of mine in at the end of July I let 3 do the natural thing all the way through and at first they started off a little loose and weren't coming together but now I've stopped crocheting they have caught up to all my other dreads so lets say my dreads are around 6 - 7 weeks old and the ones that are natural look as much like dreads as the rest of my crochet ones do. Oh and if your worried about messy wild hair while your waiting for your hair to do its knotty thing head bands or scarfs whatever you wish to call them are now your new best friend I found that in the beginning putting it up just made it look more unruly and crazy cat lady then it would have been had i left it down.

Oily Roots and smelly dreads

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

My hair should really be well adjusted to not being washed very often as before I had dreads I only washed it once a week this sounds gross but I had really curly hair and would get really dry if I washed it more not to mention uncontrollable and frizzy I never had this oily problem before I put my dreads in.I really like the sound of your bs soak and wash routine I'll give it a shot if the acv and bs thing doesn't work for me.I don't know if this is of any importance, perhaps I should have mentioned it earlier but its not effecting how fast my dreads are tightening because the oil is only on my scalp it never seems to move past the loose hair at the roots its like it all just builds up on my scalp and can't go anywhere so stays there feeling disgusting.I work in a hot kitchen for 12 hours a day with a hat on and my dreads pulled up on top of my head could this be causing the problem? Does anyone else work in a kitchen maybe there just absorbing the smells from the kitchen? Because they really smell and I don't think an oily scalp alone could make them smell this bad!Sorry this seems like a very negative post I love my dreads but smelly hair isn't good I don't want to be a smelly dread person I want to improve the dreadhead image not confirm the haters beliefs that we are stinky dirty people.

Oily Roots and smelly dreads

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

Might try it this way just tried making a straight thyme tea and I wasn't very keen on the smell, but used it anyways.Dreads still had the gross oily smell after 2 days but there not so itchy so I'm trying to hold off on doing another rinse or wash so soon. In the mean time I made up a hair perfume tea I'm going to call it with some margarine oil + cinnamon sticks, star anise, cloves, vanilla beans and a little thyme it smells yummy and my scalp feels really good now too..I smell like chai tea with a hint of citrus. Generally when you boil vegetation it looses all it's nutritional value, thus you have to conclude that the good shit from the plant ends up in the water, so I wouldn't say you have to dry them first.

I just throw em in a pot of boiling water and wait a few minutes till the water is dark, the darker the water, the stronger the tea. I make mine with thyme and rosemary then add about 1 drop of tea tree oil per cup of tea.

Oily Roots and smelly dreads

So all thyme tea is, is a tea made from the herb? I can make that i have heaps of it growing in my garden thanks heaps for your help. It was a wash day today so I followed your advice and just used bs and acv I'll keep you posted and let you know how it goes.Should i dry the herb before making the thyme tea with it? soaringeagle said:
yea plus soaps strip oils so u produce more
thyme is a common herb or spice used in cooking but if u buy small spice containers its expensive if u buy large ammounts of the loose herb its cheap
any herb store health food store u can get it in bulk online and brew your own teas
i dunno if ot grows there or not but u can grow your own too

Ok skipping the shampoo i can do and trying the acv but i have no idea where i would get thyme tea from in Australia any recommendations as to where to purchase it would be very helpful what is it exactly? No i never used any wax or other harmful products in my hair the only thing i have used is a little ground sea salt or bi carb on my ends to tighten them up in to blunt tips as these are much neater and my work said dreads where fine as long as i kept them neat-ish and clean. All the shampoos/soaps i use do have some form of anti dandruff ingredients so maybe my scalp is just to moisturized? soaringeagle said:
washing more makes em oilier skip the shampoos use the baking soda acv once or twice a week and spray the scalp with thyme tea and leave on between
did u use wax that might have made things worse
also..wot to wash cold to rince that way u open and clean pores then close em back up

Oily Roots and smelly dreads

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

I have a really oil scalp and I'm not really sure what to do about it, its making my dreads have a dirty unwashed grease smell which is gross and they get really itchy.I currently wash them 3 times a week once a week with tea tree oil shampoo, once a week with an all natural anti dandruff shampoo and then once a week with an all natural handmade rosemary shampoo bar which i follow with a bi carb soda rinse.Still i have a gross oily scalp and itchy head but the worse thing is the smell! It smells clean for a day after i wash them then it stinks again I never had this before dreads I washed my hair once a week now I'm washing it more and yuck stinky gross slimey dread head. What can i do?

I'm not so angry now I know how hard losing hair can be dreads or no dreads its hard especially when it's something that is done not by choice but by being pushed into it based on something that has happened. Be angry be whatever it is that losing your hair has made you feel, fuck i feel for you it sucks but look forward to the day when you have nice natural dreads you can wave them (and they really move) in the waxers faces and say you could have these to just try it i did and I'll never look back...Ok yes online advertising search engines ect all point you in the one direction but youtube has been running for 5 years now and I found this site through you soaringangle on youtube not to mention google images and its your photos off dreadlockssite that come up all over the place! Besides why restrict your research to online ask any damn hairdresser and yeah they may not have first hand experience but chances are they are going to be able to tell you whats most damaging to you hair! In fact i spoke to a hairdresser prior to getting my dreads she told me not to use wax because she had cut off countless dreads in her time where people had used wax and they had dread rot and stunk, when i told her i wasn't planning on it and told her i intended to backcomb and crochet she warned,me that it was very damaging to my hair i ignored her advice but that was my choice.I did mention but I'll say it again I do not support what Johnny does how he goes about things but each to there own it has not effected me but its effected many of you on this website but fuck him and what he does I don't hate him for it you people that are here now on this website you are the people who have the patience and commitment to have dreads real natural dreads show that same commitment to spreading the word that wax sucks and I'm sure eventually that we shall be the majority not the minority. soaringeagle said:
hair may grow back but dreadlocks hold in so much experience losing dreadlocks is not like getting a haircut its traumatic, depressing
dreads affect you..losimg dreads u lose a part of you
it shouldnt be taken as lightly as getting a bad haircut

and there also you touched on another huuuuuge issue
research
untill this site existed there almost was no other way to find good info.. there were literaly 3 or 4 hardto find forums burrined under thousands and thousands of affiliate sites pointing to kb or dhhq..in fact jonny, or 1 of his freinds edits the open directory projects dreadlocks catagory there are literaly millions of websites related to dreads the dmoz site lists 3.. dhhq perfect dreadlocks and how to dread..all 3 dhhq clone sites
they refuse to list us or any other sites
they refuse to accept any editors that would recomend any other sites
dmoz listings affevt listings in some other engines as well

jonny used the scummiest of scumbag marketting schemes to make damn sure nobody ever got any opinions but his
thats why he only showed 1 side of the debate and wouldnt have both sides presented in 1 place so he could control what ppl found

if just that was ended those thousands of afiliate sites closed and the whats it called dread points? sponsored dreadies thing was discintinued so there no longer was thousands of sites of lies making it impossible to find the truth that would be a huge huge step worthy of respect

but when 1 man controls all the information and puts out only flawed information that flawed information becomes the "truth" as people belirve it and is exactky why people belueve dreadies are dirty
how can they not be dirty with dirt trapped in wax?

we should stick together our dreads shouldnt

You all make me so angry, dreadlocked people stick together ffs (for fuck sake) the majority of people think we are all dirty, smelly hippies and here we are arguing about which method works best wax is bad, don't crochet, no wax is good blah, blah fucking blah.
You make a bad choice about a hair cut doesn't matter it grows back, dye it bright green instead of blonde it grows back, use wax that method doesn't work for you shave it off it grows back. Amazing isn't it how no matter what IT WILL GROW BACK!!!
The people that buy these products in the first place are people who haven't done enough research is that Johnny's fault, no i think not, I bet half the people who do more research and see that there are other methods might still go for his products why because they are the fastest way to getting the results there after. Johnny clean is making money off your vanity, impatience and lack of knowledge how is that different to most businesses. Ok worse case scenario you have to shave your head, well I'm sorry people but I hope this has taught you a lesson if you weren't to vain shaving your head wouldn't be a big deal in the first place, and maybe this will teach you some patience embrace this lesson and take this time to do more research...
I do not agree with the way Johnny makes a buck but at the end of the day I'm not the one who has to live with that on my conscience, which may be why every time someone bags ( rips ) on his products he defends them more because he wants to be able to sleep at night, his still trying to convince himself that there the best way to do it, I bet he started off with only the best intentions so help him not slander him abuse and accuse him, tell him why the wax is bad and any of the other products but don't be bitter and accusing because you had a bad experience we can all learn from mistakes that have been made if we share our knowledge and be generous and support one another as I said earlier we are few really us dreadheads we should stick together!

Keep this in mind when your posting!
