Another new dreadie

Introduce Yourself

Thanks SE! So glad that I avoided that pitfall especially since I don't have cash to blow like that. It pains me to think that people spend that kind of money to get something that should be free. I feel like you all should do one of those Mastercard commercials when it comes to dreading haha...Getting a dreadhead starter kit- $15Going to a Salon -$300+just letting nature, time and patience take care of it all for you - priceless

Another new dreadie

Introduce Yourself

I figured that I've been lurking on the site long enough and that it was time to join the community. I'm a fairly new and proud dreadie hailing from good ol Michigan! I've been letting my hair lock for about 2 months now and it's been a really awesome and exciting experience so far. Before I started my dreadlock journey, like many others, the only websites that I came across were those that promoted wax and people were suggesting that I go to a salon to start them. Originally I thought that I'd have to have someone start them for me. Fortunately late one night, I randomly decided to research some more and came across this website. I read as much as I could and was happy to learn that all I needed to start journey was with my own two hands and patience. So the minute I finished reading a lot of info from initial dreading methods to washing methods, I started two strand twisting (I have very coily afro textured hair) my hair right there on my couch with just my hands. It took a quite a while (24 hours!) but when I finished I felt pretty stoked and accomplished. I'm so happy that I was saved by the website and very informative info and advice of members and avoided wax and other harmful products. Right now I use a baking soda and acv wash and rinse whenever my scalp starts to itch (or just a quick water rinse when I'm in a rush...it temporarily eases the itchiness) and I have used a little organic twist gel twice to lightly tidy up a little for special occasions but I very much prefer the messiness and craziness of it all. Other than that nothing else has touched my hair. I just let my hair be...frizz, loose hairs, wild roots and all :)

Hair Shrinkage on young locks.

General Questions

Ive noticed, after watching many different dread vlogs on youtube on several hair types, that many people with kinky or afro textured hair tends to start showing growth within months after starting dreading. Ive noticed my own hair, after 3 months of dreading, starting to show growth. Before I started dreading, when I would force straighten my hair, my hair came down to my shoulders but when it was in its natural state, the back came up to the nape of my neck and the sides and fronts up to my chin. When I initially twisted to start my journey, it had shrunk a few inches but now I can see that it is growing. I, personally, am not really concerned with shrinkage with my own hair but was curious about whether if shrinkage was less prominent for people with kinky type hair...
