Hi

Dread Maintenance

Hi!

My hair sounds a lot like yours. My hair is around 4(at it's absolute shortest in the front) to 6 inches. So far it's been going good with no problems. (I have pictures up of the progress)

When you're starting dreadlocks you want to make sure to continue washing your hair with a residue free shampoo. A lot of people stop washing their hair or wash it only once a week. If you were washing it more than that before your head will go into "What's happening?!" mode and start producing more oils. Some people have said that the scalp can become very itchy as well.

I use an awesome all natural, residue free shampoo bar that I found through this site's shops that they featured. I just lather it up in my palm(reduces the risk of getting soap chunks in a dread) and make sure to get the scalp nice and clean. The suds and bubbles will naturally just find their way down the rest of your dreads so you don't need to super apply shampoo directly to the dreads. I usually shampoo my hair Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. If I was doing something sweaty or dirty, working outside, etc. I might go home and shampoo that day as well.

I try to not wet my dreads unless I'm shampooing them. My hair has always taken a very long time to dry, and them being in little baby dreads makes it that much worse. Whenever I do wash them I make sure to blow dry until they're at least 85%-ish dry. What I usually do for the everyday showers is just get a shower cap. I've seen some people using plastic grocery bags or old t-shirt wraps too.

As for the smiley stuff.. not idea! Might be the sebum oils, etc. on your head doing something odd because of the shampoo habits.

Hope I helped and I hope your journey is amazing! :)

Whew! Long post!

Shampoo? For starting dreadlocks?

Dread Maintenance

I just try and stick with what I know when it comes to the shampoo! Usually anything advertised.. I count as a lie. >_>

I get my all natural dread shampoo bar soaps from a seller here on the dreadlocksite, via the link that SE posted. Can't go wrong with natural/homemade! :D

Good luck!

Hello There!

General Talk

Thanks for the comment! My hair is knotting way faster than I thought it ever would, must be the bleach! :) Thank you!

Wow, I can see how that would be a job of it. Can't wait to see them all dreaded up. Know what, due to the bleaching, your hair will dread faster due to being dryer.....have a fun ride to your dreads...peace

Yes it is! ahah xD I took a shower later and it seemed to separate itself, saving me at least a little work. I figure it's matting so much because I bleached it one too many times before. >_> haha

Hello There!

General Talk

Hi everyone! So, I'm on day four of my natural journey into dready-times. Things are progressing rather well, to which I'm thankful for. Just thought I would share with you all the joy of having to somehow separate this mess:

Silly ol' hair. Haha! Hope everyone is having a wonderful Saturday morning! :)

I LOVE this pic! ^^ It's funny because before I began my natural journey (and before I found this forum) I really admired the look of very maintained, artificial locs. Now that I understand locs a bit more, the messier the better! Your hair looks fabulous and I like the shaved sides, too. :)

That would be nice! Aha. :)

I'll see what it does for a while before I try and mess with it. I don't want to tamper with nature too much! Here's a picture of the back of my head: Might be a bit hard to see though!

Remember matts are knots too. Sounds like your hair is gonna dread quickly!

Thanks! I'll look into the hemp thread. :) It's only been a couple of days, and already the back of my head is just matting into one large baseball sized knot. Not dready at all! I'll try and separate the problem areas, encourage them a bit with the thread or beads! :)

Good morning Shayla :) Elastics break hair. Even if you just use it for a day or two it is gonna cause some damage. Long term use ..they get tangled in the dread and dry rot. Try tying some hemp thread around it. As it starts to knot up adding a bead works well. Just make sure the bead gets moved every once in a while. I have a small pewter bead stuck in the middle of one of my dreads. My hair knotted and became fatter above and below it.

Dreading Methods

Hi there!

I'm fairly new the dread life, just starting out. My hair reminded me of something this morning that I had forgotten. I have a large chunk of hair on the top-back of my head that becomes extremely matted and tangled if I go even a day without at least combing my fingers through it.

I'm trying to keep it separated for the most part but it's rather difficult. I'm going about my dreads the natural way but I'm wondering if I could use elastics during this first little beginning to keep my hair separated? Kind of give it a little boost?

Thanks everyone! And to Laura Earle, it's actually a mohawk just not put up. It's about three inches in width and gets a bit skinnier in the back. :D I think a dreaded mohawk would be super awesome aha.
