Is it not meant to be for me?

Dreadlocks Journey Emotional Support

I know I've posted here several times about my long unsuccessful attempt to get my hair to lock up. Last time I had a comb or brush in imy hair was June 17 so we're getting close to a year now. I've faithfully tried everything I've read here and taken all the good advice I've been given but so far nothing has really worked. I've bought the products like the dread locking gel and the dreadlocks shampoo. I've used and am still using the BS/ACV wash with sea salt. I leave my hair loose most of the time. I've been using a hair dryer lately to see if that would help but before recently I just let it air dry. I sleep on wool. I did a few TNR's to see if that would help but they just fell out after a couple of days. I have 2 small sections in the back of my hair that I can say are matted and tangled but certainly aren't dreadlocks. I don't know if they count as "baby dreads" or not. The first one I've had for a long time and it hasn't developed any further than when it started. The second one is more recent. Both of them I just discovered one morning when I woke up. I have a couple of little areas in the underneath sections of my hair that are kind of tangled but don't seem to do anything else. I could probably comb them out easily if I tried.

My hair is coarse and thick. I've always been told that it has a lot of "body" whatever that means - for any of you hair people out there. I'm uploading a couple of pics to help you see what it looks like after 11 months.

I'm seriously thinking of giving up. I mean this is ridiculous. I guess I will give it till June 17, which will be a full year and then accept that it just wasn't meant to be for me.

If you can help me I don't want to give up. My partner says my hair looks like it did the first month. That is so discouraging.

new dread locking gel from dreadlockshampoo.com

Dread Products

I'm still not totally sold on the gel. I've been using it a few weeks now. It seems to me that if you have a section that is very close to dreading it will go ahead and help it lock up. My hair has been VERY stubborn. It has helped me on those sections so I have a few more baby dreads now and I'm thankful for that. I have tried using it on some of my twisty, ropey sections and it doesn't really do anything for those. It does leave somewhat of a residue in my experience but I'm ok with that. It's not noticeable unless you pull the hair apart then you see white stuff.

I absolutely adore the shampoo. It is so fabulous. It has gotten my hair and scalp cleaner than anything else. I've used Bronner's, Baking soda, Neutrogena in the past. Nothing has cleaned like this stuff. Plus the smell is amazing. I bought the nag champa scent. I don't think I'll ever buy another shampoo. I have the liquid because my hair is slow to dread. I put a squirt in a pitcher with a little water and swish it around then pour over my head in sections. I gently work it through it all of my hair and scalp and leave it on several minutes then rinse. It is expensive but very well worth it.

I promised a "review" after I used the products awhile so this is it. Your mileage may vary. I will continue to use the gel as I have baby dread sections that form. It can't hurt right? It's just not the miracle I was hoping for, lol. :)

I felt like I barely used any at all. It's very expensive (for me) and I used a dot about the size of a pencil lead. It spreads really far. I will try what you said about just putting it near the roots and twisting down and see how that works.

new dread locking gel from dreadlockshampoo.com

Dread Products

I got mine yesterday and I'm reserving my final opinion until I use it for a few days. My initial impression isn't great but I don't really have dreads yet. I have one sort of baby dread in the very center back of my head. I obviously put the gel on that one. But I also put it on one of my "twists". My hair is more like ropes or twists that have formed, not yet locked or matted or tangled even though it's been since June since I combed. So anyway, I put it on a section that I could see clearly in the front. It dries pretty stiff like any hair gel. I've used a lot of gel in my life to spike my hair and such when it was super short. This gel could do that if you put enough on. I used it very sparingly and after it dried I pulled the section apart and it was all flaky and gunky and white. Kind of icky. Now, like I said, I don't have actual dreads and if I did, I obviously wouldn't be pulling them apart so that's why I'm unsure. Will it build up in the hair, especially hair that's matted and locked? So after I wash it I'll see how clean it gets. That's why I don't want to give a final opinion on it yet. I really, really want to love this stuff because I need my hair to lock up. It's been since June for me and I'm getting really impatient. I'd love to hear what others think.

Ok, just ordered shampoo and gel because I have my first official baby dread!!!! YAY!!! Finally!!! After 7 months of patience and impatience and wondering if it was ever going to happen. It's in the very back center of my head or I'd take a picture and proudly show it to you. Hopefully many more will soon follow. Can't wait to try the new products! Oh and I know it's the real thing because it's survived after several washings. All the times I've tried tnr's never did. This one created itself with no help from me!

I need this product NOW!!! I haven't combed since June 17 and still no dreads. In fact, I came here today to try and figure out what I might be doing wrong. I've tried to be patient, but man, this is ridiculous to have nothing yet.

OK, I've got some hemp I bought for crafts so I'll give it a shot. Thanks for all the advice!

General Questions

SE, where would I get those cuffs you mention? I live in a pretty conservative area and not sure I can find stuff for dreads so I would probably have to order from the internet I guess. Or could I get them from like a craft store like Michaels? I'm not sure I know what they even are.

General Questions

Ok, I am switching to the Baking soda starting today and adding a bit of sea salt. I will skip the vinegar at first and see how it does. I can't believe it took you 6 months Heather. I guess my expectations were off. I didn't expect a full head of dreads by now, but I did expect some knotting to have started by now. I appreciate all the support and suggestions and I hope they will work.
