Any over 30's dreadies?

General Talk

I'm 36 and was wondering if there are any other dreadies in their 30's and above. I see all the pictures of 'youngsters' filled with youthful vibrancehere and it makes me feel a little out of my depth!

dread wax remover is ready!

Dread Products

Has anyone tried the Locking Gel? Is it really good at smoothing down the frizzies?

Not that it matters, some of the parts of my dreads (the veryends) that had wax havebroken off....thanks DHHQ (not!) I've used alot of hot water over and quite caustic herbal substances to kill lice in my dreads over the years, I don't think there can be any wax left.

Vinegar and lemon juice are also citric acid, as is the stuff you buy to descale kettles. I don't think anyone really needs another 'product' for removing wax.

dreadlocks changing more than your hair

General Talk

I guess after 7 years with my dreads I don't care so much about other people's opionions, I'm not sure I ever really did. I used to be Agoraphobic, which is a fear of being around alot of people, crowds...being judged by those people or embarrassed in front of them. I think it's helped alot with those fears as well as the passing of alot of time. I still get bad days when someone's remark will cut me to the bone...when my son tells me that his class mates mother said that I look like a tramp (bum/homeless person) WhatI find funny about people's remarks is that they have failed to examine their own image and critique upon that.

I have not had any major spiritual awakenings, or any kind of epiphany...butI have found alot of things that I am interested in. I guess I have a greater interest in learning about everything than I used to. That's probably more to do with age. : )

beads

General Questions

I find that Pyrex glass, wooden or Peyote stitches (made from tiny seed beads) are the most durable. I wouldavoid metal in case it rusts or corodes in some way. Try not to put them up near your head too much as they can hit you in the face or dig in when you sleep. You should'nt need to take them out when you wash your hair, I pretty much forget that mine are even there : ) and I've had the same ones in for years. Make sure you measurethe diameter ofthe dread/s youwant the beads forbefore choosing or orderingthem to make sure you get some that fit. : )

Thinning Out Mid-Dread

Dread Maintenance

My dreads are nearly 7 years old (in April) and over the past few months I have noticed that some of my dreads have thinned right out at about 2/3 inches from the tip, so much in the case of about three of them that I was able to pull the end of the dread off with little effort. They were lessthan 1cm diameter in the first place in mostcases. Is this a natural process to lose parts of dreads or because of the way my dreads were started (backcombed using DDHQ products)? Maybe these sections were held together mostly wax..even though they seemed well locked before? I'm worried that bits will start falling off all over.

Shampoos and Soaps ~ Maybe get a list started

Dread Maintenance

Thank you for the link, although the site does'nt seem to be working. I just looked up Satya Nag Champa soap at the site I used to buy alot of inscence from but it contains palm, coconutand olive oil, so I don't think I will use that on my hair.

What can I do for the dryness of my dreads? Aloe Vera gel?

Shampoos and Soaps ~ Maybe get a list started

Dread Maintenance

I have been using Dread Fusion Dread Shampoo, a U.K made shampoo, available inanunscented bar orlemon scented liquid, for a few months. My scalp is less itchy than with the bicarb and vinegar plusI can wash my hair while I bathe rather than have my head hanging in the sink for 10 minutes. Does not lather much in hard water butcleans well. Leaves the loose hairs soft and fluffy, the dreads themselves areabit on the dry side but that isprobably due to the age ofthem, nearly 7 years.

Ingredients: Aqua, Pottasium Oleate, Pottasium Cocoate, Glycerine, Pottasium Citrate, Pottasium Palm Kernelate,Palm Kernal Acid, Cymbopogon

One thing that worries me is the use of Palm products, usually not environmentallyfriendly in their production.
