Have problems with your dreads and helmets?

Dread Accessories

Awesome, man! Thanks for the advice! (even though its been over a year)

I hope your dreads are flapping in the wind by now!

If you are still an active member, or in case anyone else visits this post, it has been suggested to me to wear a thin wool cap under a helmet to help promote the knotting at the roots, and to keep the locks from unraveling when pulling the helmet off. I plan on trying both methods, since I try to take my bike everywhere I go, so ill try to post an update when Ive experimented a bit.

After reading through all the replies, I think I should also give the satin lining a try as well!

Oh, and I've been riding about 4 years, have had a Lifan 110, '82 Honda GL500 Silverwing, '97 Kawa Vilcan, '74 Honda CB740, and have been riding my Yamaha VStar 1100 Classic for almost a year now. Love my big beefy cruiser!

Well, sometimes they do, and for my own personal reasons, I would like to keep them as tamed as possible. It is possible, I've seen it all over the place, and thats what I'm aiming for.

Thanks for the feedback on the dreads.

As far as the music, the soul band, were playing because we love the tunes we have chosen, and we love the energy and reaction we get from the crowd. We dont do just weddings, we have been playing bars, restaurants, makeshift house parties, birthday parties (at bars) and other things of the sort. We play in the soul band to provide entertainment for other people who really love the music and request for us to play for that reason. It also doesnt hurt that we are able to book gigs that pay upwards of $3000-$4000.

And as far as original music, Im in two other bands with completely original music that I absolutely love! One of which, we generally do dress nicesly, but occasiaonlly dress silly, or wear things like Jedi robes just for fun, because the music is very fun - kind of a Mr. Bungle (Mike Patton) kind of feel.

The third band, we just wear whatever we want.

We wear the suits because the soul band is playing music for events like weddings and parties, and it just makes it that much cooler when good musicians play music you know, play it well, and look good doing it!

You may not think that a suit looks bad and bland on absolutely everybody, but in our band, we take pride in being presentable, and being given compliments on on not only the music, but out presentation as a whole. Theres more to playing music for people on stage than just playing the music. Its an artistic presentation, and the suits are part of that.

This is me at various stages of growing my hair out over the last 2 years.

And this is me on day 4. More pics will be uploaded when it starts looking any different.

I only wear a suit when I'm playing in either of the bands I'm in. One of which sounds nothing like anything you would imagine a bunch of guys in suits to be playing, and the other is an 11-piece soul cover band, so I think those are pretty good exceptions for the social stigma that goes along with wearing a suit. At work, I can wear whatever I want, so thats not why I'm concerned about the suit.

I understand that point, but to me, it can still look unkempt and a bit sloppy in a suit, if its really frizzy, undefined, and how Ive seen some people, where they basically have dreads growing out of a mess of matted roots. I understand the importance of keeping them separated, but its still hard to look at my dreads now and imagine how they could eventualy look how I want them. I'm just trying to get some reassuring advice as often as possible, haha.

Dude, amazing job! Thats EXACTLY how I want mine to look! Straight, even, no loops or lumps, and looks nice in a suit! Any tips based on how you did it? How did u avoid them combining at the roots and all of the stray hairs?

Wax vs. No Wax dreadlocks

Dreading Methods

Almost 2 years later, and they look great! Congrats!

I hope the natural way ends up working well for myself too! (got a ways to go)
