new guy with straight hair

OK..so I've searched and searched every where..I have short straight hair can't 2 inches..I wanna start dreads..now my questions..how long should I wait? I don't want long dreads..maybe 6to8 inches..and how should I start this.?? I've read so many diff ideas..just don't know which way to go
