What naturally causes dreads to become thick or thin?

General Questions

ok thank you. I'm going the freeform route so I expect to have all different sizes of dreads; the more unique, the better! I'm going to check out that video, tho I don't have anything to separate just yet :) (only 2 weeks in)

What naturally causes dreads to become thick or thin?

General Questions

I was wondering what naturallycauses dreads to be thin or thick . Of course many separate dreads or hairs to make thinner locks, but what actually causes dreads to be thick or thin?

Is it simply the thickness of one's hair? Or is it just how a person's hair happens to uniquely act while locking naturally? Just curious!

What the hell is in my hair?

Dread Maintenance

hmm I don't know about little white feathers, but I have mini white chunks on my scalp and I use bucks county tea tree bars (not necessarily in my hair unless it's fallen out of my scalp). Like Mons said, you (and I!) probably need to wash out the shampoo better.

quick question on separating

Dread Maintenance

Is separating only used to separate two dreads that are starting to congo? I thought I read somewhere that somebody was also separating loose hairs out to keep their dreads thin, but could have misread the post (couldn't find the discussion again).

drying my hair

Dread Maintenance

Just started using a natural shampoo today so it's officially day 1 for me :) I have a question about drying. I know air drying is obviously the best way to dry hair while dreading, but I was wondering if it's okay for me to do these two things to get some of the initial wetness out of my hair to allow it to dry faster:

1. I pull my hair into a quick ponytail and squeeze- this gets a lot of water out

2. Then I throw a towel on top of my head and I just pat it against my hair to get more water out. I don't move the towel around my head b/c I know that would disrupt the dreading process, I just press the towel against my hair to grab more of the initial wetness.

I have really thick hair so this allows it to dry a lot faster than not doing this (hair dries in about 30-40 min).

adding shampoo to a bs/acv wash

Dread Maintenance

yeah definitely, but at the same time you don't want too dry of a scalp I would think. I just have a really dry scalp compared to others.
