I too used wax at first. got mildew, lice and shaved my head. Gone Natural since then. Most folks around here have em for about a year or like 6 months and then cut em. Patience. just let em grow!
I wash mine once every two to three weeks or so unless I been at a bar or get gasoline in them from workin on buses. I been using Grandpas pine tar shampoo. I let the dreads take their couse besides that.
Here in Alabama, I get shit from rednecks of course like faggot and niggerhair. Also I get crap from some young black folks who have dreads like I am not allowed or deserve to have them cuz I'm white. Theres alot of bullshit people out there and they aint worth your time or breath! I just shake my head and walk away unless they put their hands on me.
