Dr. Woods Shampoo?!?!?!?

Introduce Yourself

I have this! and have been using it for about 5 months now. I first used the peppermint one but now I'm using the tree tea oil one. Either one is great! it makes my scalp feel clean but not dry and tight yet it doesn't moisturize my hair to the point where my dreads come undone. It's pretty good. I like to add a little bit of water. I don't remember how much though, I just calculate. Anyway, I know they also have a black soap one..Might be the next one I try. But definitely try it out.

Dread Maintenance

Hm dont use conditioner! arent you trying to get the loose hairs to knot up? i think it would reverse your progress in a way. but i understand you're frustrated and at this point anything that will help (even if bad) seems like the only way out.

so i took everything out of my hair (beads, wraps). i washed with tea tree tingle shampoo. i skipped the sea salt. my hair still feels like straw. so brittle and just awful. i'm seriously considering using conditioner after my next wash.

Dread Maintenance

THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS TO ME!!! my lower half doesnt dread no matter what.. its so frustrating that i have resolved to just keep that lower half undreaded. it actually shows in my pictures lol. but i always feel like im less of a dreadhead because of it, makes me feel bad.

but i like what you said about "Part dreaded and part undreaded is a really cool juxtaposition". that just made me smile extra hard. thanks for the indirect confidence boost lol

my whole underneath is undreaded too, Heather, but I have well defined sections. I bet it will in time, and I bet yours will too. Just use something that smells and feels good for your hair and don't even think about it knotting, you committed to no brush, so just keep it clean soft and comfy. It looks way cool as it is, I think. Part dreaded and part undreaded is a really cool juxtaposition. You could always t & r it, slip beads on to keep it tight and then you wouldn't have to worry about it anymore. Can you get a water conditioner system?Even Brita would help for washing. In my humble opinion, you are lovely whatever it's doing']. My Hubby wasn't thrilled either, haha, but he loves me so he puts up with me being me, too.

General Talk

Being latino myself, this is true. I mean obviously it isn't everyone of us who are into this type of mentality but if you're going to say it doesnt exist, you're blind. I, for one, do not care about having such desired bodies but i have heard and seen so many people who do and it's just part of their culture and media. Personally, i grew up around a lot of older women( since my mom worked at home and was a manicurist) Most of her clients had some type of plastic surgery that, to tell you the truth, were extremely over the top fake and unnecessary. The pressure to look good and have this great body that like you mentioned, Desirae, is almost insanely rare to have (slim everywhere else but with a big butt) is so much that these women dont even notice that they're being brainwashed.

Desirae Rose said:

I'm honestly not surprised. In the black and Latino communities, the pressure for females to have big butts can be like white and Asian girls being pressured to be busty/skinny, and it's not a simple matter of 'just sit on your butt and eat crap and get fat' because the goal is to have a nice big round butt, but still be slim everywhere else. A fat girl with a big butt is nothing special, but a slim girl with a big but - OMG you're talking about glory!

When you're not as invested in society and the media it's easy to just tell people to ignore, but for most people it's not that easy, because the message is EVERYWHERE that people are expected to hate every part of themselves and change every part of themselves, and it doesn't help that imperfection is demonized. The less you fit the ideal, the more you're demonized, and the brainwashing is so deep no one wants to do anything about it.

You know it's a problem when most females surveyed would rather die than to not be beautiful.

Peyote Stitch!

Dread Accessories

I have been wondering about the peyote stitch for a while. I love making things and love challenges. The internet, especially youtube is my best friend when it comes down to figuring how to make certain things lol. So i just thought it would be nice to post up this link that i found very very useful for people who want to learn how to peyote stitch. I'm a beginner myself and found this to be a great way to learn and also the instructor goes at a very beginner friendly pace. Hope this helps other people out :)

Dreadlocks Journey Emotional Support

I love weather, it doesn't take anyone's criticism. It just does what it does and acts the way it wants. Every time I feel a little down by hurtful things some inconsiderate people say, I remember this. Great post by the way!

Hair Growth?

General Questions

I know this might sound silly but I really wonder about this sometimes. Does hair grow normally or at all when it is being naturally dreaded? I'm only wondering because I was trying to let my hair grow a couple months ago, before beginning my dread journey, and I really want my hair to keep growing at a somewhat steady rate. If it doesn't, that's fine too. I love my progress so far anyway.
