Natural dreadlocks, from day 0

Member Journals and Timelines

@soaringeagle - I’m not, I either let it dry on its own if I’ve washed it early enough, otherwise I blow dry it mostly dry and then let it dry itself from there. I prefer to air dry, but sometimes I don’t get in til late and I don’t want to go to bed with wet hair 😖

@aquaguy - Thankyou 😊 How long have you been going for? I saw your photos in your forum post and I can see a couple well developed looking dreads in there. I have good sections but my tangles are loose, like I could easily pull them apart (hence why I had to tell my Mam to stop playing with them 😂) the front of my hair will start to section itself up and I’ll get excited and then in a day or two it looks like I’ve brushed it 🤦🏻‍♀️ It’s still progress though, if it knots and unknots eventually it’ll knot in a way that it won’t be able to come undone! Just don’t get discouraged, your hair will look awesome in time 😊

Happy 3 month mark for my hair!

I saw my family over the weekend, my Mam was fascinated with my hair 😂 she can’t believe that I’ve just not been brushing it and it’s sectioned itself! For now at least, I’m past the frizzy halo stage and my hair just looks like defined waves, but if you touch it you can feel the tangles. I showed her a few of my more developed bits but I had to stop her from touching it too much 😂

I feel very lucky that she’s always just let me do my own thing, she’s not into the same clothing style as me, has no piercings (well, only one in each ear) and no tattoos, but she’s never been negative towards my choices. Concerned at first maybe, but always supportive and understanding. She knows that I’ve never followed trends and that I’m happy with my choices, and I think it makes her happy to know that I’m happy being me 😊

I still have nothing going on up front really, I’m trying to sleep on it but I always roll over! I’ve started sleeping on a knitted cushion to see if that’ll help but I know it’ll happen eventually.

Hope everyone’s well, I’ve not had another dream where I’ve cut or brushed my hair, but I did have a dream where I had long dreads, and then I think I realised that that wasn’t quite right and it turned out they were those plastic ones I used to plait in for festivals 😂 the good thing I’m taking away from that dream is that even though they were butt length and awesome, once I realised they weren’t my dreads I was upset that I’d put them in and missed my messy head!

But yeah, hi everyone! Hope you’re all loving life 😘

The vegan diet and myself

Dreads and Diets

I’ve decided to become pescatarian since the new year and I feel great! I’m not bloated anymore and I don’t feel so sluggish either 😊 I decided to keep fish in my diet so that I didn’t just cut everything out at once (baby steps!) but I don’t eat it every day. So far I’m loving my new diet, I thought it’d be a lot harder than it is but it’s been real easy so far! I’ve eaten meat for my whole 29 years but it’s just been making me feel progressively more sick, now veggies are tasting nice instead of just feeling like an accompaniment to a meat centred dish.

Am I screwed?

Help! Save My Dreads

Hi there, I’m not an expert by any means so I can’t give you any first hand advice, but there’s a wealth of knowledge in the Dreaducation section of this site and people who’ve had similar problems to you in the forums. People are probably going to ask if you have any photos of the matted parts so that they can help in the best way, but I don’t think you’re screwed. Loose roots are normal, I think your only problems might be if the dreads that have joined together are forming a dread that’s too big or if you have matted parts that are pulling on your scalp and are painful, but I haven’t seen anything on here that SE hasn’t been able to help with. Have a look through the forums, I’d say from everything I’ve read on this site that going to a salon is probably a mistake and the wax will need to come out, that’s the usual top two issues on here!

Had to wear my hair up at work today, it makes for a rather funky pony tail 😂

Aww thanks guys 😘 I’m nowhere near giving up, the day after that post where I was a bit bummed out, I found a well formed little baby dread just behind my left ear, it’s round and feels all knotty and I didn’t even know it was there!

@poopiepants - I’m using a liquid Dollylocks shampoo and I made a salt water spray too, I don’t think we have dawn in the uk, and I’ve heard it’s not great in hard water areas which is practically the whole of the uk! 😂

@bazooka-guru - thank you lovely 😊 I want to make so many more! I have designs in mind with gemstones and thinner wire, I had a go at making a Peyote sleeve but my tiny beads aren’t uniform in shape so they don’t sit together well, but I’ll find a way to use them in something!

I had another dream where I brushed my hair out 😱 I hate those dreams! It was like I’d forgotten that I’d stopped brushing it and only remembered when I was finished 🤷🏻‍♀️

Brushed ends

General Questions

I think it’s personal choice, I don’t know if ends blunt on their own, I know they can be forced if you want them. I’ve read that blunt ends hold water in the dread whereas wispy ends help the water drip out, so it could be a convenience thing too. I prefer wispy ends over blunt ends personally, think it looks more natural and that’s what I’m going for 😊

Feeling a bit bummed out today, the front of my hair looks like it’s un-sectioning 😩 still haven’t invested in the recommended dreadlock shampoo but I will next pay day, hoping that will help. Feeling a bit frustrated with the progress too, but the back of my head and the side that I sleep on is feeling pretty good, the sections are feeling really defined and they’re getting a little rough in places where it’s tangling up.

I’m sticking with it, just can’t wait to have a beautiful head of dreads 😊 I’ve been collecting pretty things, charms off a broken bracelet, some beautiful embroidery thread, some tiny bells out of a cat toy that my dog destroyed 😂 going to make some decorations for when they’re a little more mature.

I’m taking another step towards full dready commitment this weekend, purging my dressing table of all the hair care and styling products I won’t be using anymore, but I hate waste and I’m seeing my family over Christmas so I’ll see if anyone wants any of it 😊

Maybe I can get myself a pretty trinket box for my decorations and stuff, I’ll check the charity shops.

While I’m here and rambling, would adding a few drops of essential oil to my salt spray have any adverse affects on my hair? I’d like it to act as a fragrances boost inbetween washes 😊 are there any I should stay away from? Any that would be beneficial?

Thanks for reading, feel better now I’ve put it into words 😊
