Natural dreadlocks, from day 0

Member Journals and Timelines

TashTash: @aquaguy - Thankyou šŸ˜Š How long have you been going for? I saw your photos in your forum post and I can see a couple well developed looking dreads in there. I have good sections but my tangles are loose, like I could easily pull them apart (hence why I had to tell my Mam to stop playing with them šŸ˜‚) the front of my hair will start to section itself up and Iā€™ll get excited and then in a day or two it looks like Iā€™ve brushed it šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø Itā€™s still progress though, if it knots and unknots eventually itā€™ll knot in a way that it wonā€™t be able to come undone! Just donā€™t get discouraged, your hair will look awesome in time šŸ˜Š

That will happen for a while yet, once it stops untangling and re-knotting youā€™ll quickly notice locs forming, and fringes quite often tend to be the last to dreadlock, and haha my Nan sometimes does that with my hair too.

I stopped brushing bothering to comb it about 7-8 months, not sure exactly. I thought they would progress a lot quicker when I started but I was so scared of unknotting any tiny knots I was shying away from washing my hair too often which just made it greasy and less likely to dreadlock haha, but I learned that it will be constantly unknotting and knotting for ages so since I stopped caring about that it really started to progress.

I actually have TnRā€™ed a couple because I wanted to experiment but kind of wished Iā€™d have left it alone.

To comb or not to comb...

General Questions

If I added essential oil, only a couple of drops, to the salt water spray, would it negate the effects of the salt water on the hair?Ā

Some better photos. Just sprayed some salt water on them. They still look more like curls than anything though, I think.Ā

Wow. They are looking awesome, and after such a short amount of time as well. They re going to turn out amazing. :)

I wish mine were going as well as yours, but itā€™s a journey. It teaches you how not to care about peopleā€™s opinions and just be yourself.

General Questions

Here are some (terribly taken) photos.

I tried to take a photo of the matted part but you couldnā€™t really see it in the photo.

The Seed of Freeform

No, I donā€™t use that because I heard that it weakens the hair.Ā

To comb or not to comb...

General Questions

Iā€™ve been freeforming for about 8 months, give or take a month. Like you, looking at how long it takes thatā€™s why I canā€™t decide whether to just leave it. I thought my hair would knot up a lot quicker than it did because itā€™s naturally curly and very thick actually, turns out it prefers to mat rather than to dread LOL. Itā€™s getting to the point where I have to pull most of them apart everyday now which is kind of irritating.

I donā€™t understand it though, because looking at yours and everyone elseā€™s on here (freeform or just TnR) they kind of go all the way up the hair (if you know what I mean)Ā but mine are all at the bottom, kind of at the base of my head but not at the top or anything, very, very weird. Kind of hard to describe. Iā€™ve got a few photos but itā€™s difficult to take pictures of them at the back because unless I lift them up you canā€™t really tell theyā€™re locs.

To comb or not to comb...

General Questions

I have been considering combing my hair recently, ridding it of all the knots and not yet fully-formed dreadlocks, but only to start over again using free form. Iā€™m just hesitant about it.Ā

My hair at the side of my head (on one side) is literally just one matted mass of hair, and I imagine if I let it dreadlock itā€™d become a carpet dread because there is no way I can find to separate it into sections. It is at least 4 inches wide. It is the bottom layer of hair, there are mini dreadlocks forming on the layer of hair over it (if that makes sense?).Ā

Another problem is, there are no dreadlocks forming at the back of my head, except at the very bottom. Not sure why, I use salt water quite a bit.

Peace.
