SE-great idea with the necklace! and the words of encouragement about the hairline taking forever to dread up! (is there a reason I can't "like" posts anymore, or am I just dumb? :P)

AMP,

I am extremely jealous of your curly and quickly dreading mane! (i have stick straight and I feel like I've just begun what many, like you, experience in a couple of months!...but it's getting there. I mean, takes awhile, but it is doing it's thing.) Anyway, It's just awesome your progress and looks great! :)

Introduce Yourself

i second this!!

I mean, you may just get lucky, but i essentially had to undo all or significant portions of my crocheted ones, because they were doing absolutely nothing but collecting residue. And even the ones i "fixed", i know there is/was significant damage there, lost a lot of loose hair after only a few months of having them, and the growth rate had to start all over. I basically lost like 6 months (rough guess) and i had only had them for about 4months at that point (or, well maybe a bit longer because it takes awhile to remove these super tight dreads and i/the people I asked were in denial or didn't know the extent of the damage). So...yes avoid crochet, or only use it for tucking in the occasional lose strand, but that should only be in dire needs. Mostly, you will just have to trust that those lose hairs will find their way to the appropriate dread.

And yes, they will fall out. I have been neglecting, but i thought i'd try a t&r on my stubborn sections. Nope! Now those fall out too! BUT, they will get there...eventually...right SE?? haha no i have faith. Know of someone who took 2 years before ANYthing even started to happen! (that's what i hold onto.)

p.s. t&r is fine to use though. I wasn't saying that that wasn't a good idea :)

Straight hair in dreams.....nightmare!

General Talk

I have not, probably because I am still too new at this and i only have a few actually more mature dreads that i will occasionally feel nestle against my neck, or i can twirl or pull on to sleep comfortably...but the funny thing is that just today, hubby was saying something about this, or i said this is a nightmare (losing them) and he was like, "that's a thing?! (to have dreams)" haha and i said, 'yeah, of course! I am always hearing about this in the dread communities!" :P hmm, yeah, i suppose i can't even compare it to having kids with him (well, i haven't had them either, but i can kindof understand), but it is! I mean, you get attached! And btw, my little dreadies (the newer ones) are like around 9months as I type this. haha Still got a ways to go though! (there are still some falling out! but I've definitely found a few more holding on! :) )

Dealing with Criticism

General Questions

yeah, you've gotta shrug it off. Be as nice as you can about their genuine concerns, be educated and answer their questions, but as far as preference, you can't force people to like what they don't like. I get this almost every single day, but it has gotten to be more jokingly now so it's more just fun. And every once in awhile, a joke that they are liked gets thrown in too! haha However, I'm still hoping and waiting that one day they will actually be liked, without the jokes. ;)

You can remind them that YOU would still love them if they ever got a bad hairstyle or something. A preference doesn't take away from the love, and if it does, well then you might have to re-evaluate your relationships or how much you really want these. Is this a relationship breaker or not? Is there a compromise or are you deadset on it? I'm only just over a year in right now and I'm still not sure if I'll keep them forever, but I am secure in my choice and have support, and I am definitely not ready to get rid of them yet! :D

I love reading the positive comments on these threads for hope that folks might change their minds when the dreads mature, but also just because even the most secure people like reassurances every now and again. :P

I think you look good! :) I'm actually sooo trying to be patient for my dreads TO actually start shrinking. I have a few that have already gone through the whole process (have started growing out again) so I can assure you they will, but yeah. I'm looking forward to the short ones! I have a few 3 to 4 inchers, but the rest are still long, like 12inches or so. hehe grass is always greener! :)

Negativity towards dreadlocks

Dreadlocks Journey Emotional Support

great topic! I loved reading all of these inspiring stories and encouraging words. :) I am also surrounded by doubtful and or folks that just plain don't like dreads. What can I do!? This is what I need right now. I could ask them to change certain things and they won't do it, so why should i? hehe

Twist and Rip Dreadlock Timeline (10 Months!- UPDATED)

Member Journals and Timelines

Looks awesome! I didn't know we were on roughly the same timeline! Actually, I'm a few days shy of 7months right now. But, cool to see this! I'm not far off then! I apologize that I'm a little shy to share pics, but I've got similar things going on. A few 3inchers and many still as long as 15inches?? (I actually haven't measured in awhile, but something like that)

well, best to you and your journey! :)

flat iron?!!?? yeah, good to hear you'll be ditching that.

Crocheting- yeah, I can say mine were bad enough, I had to redo or like sortof loosen them up. There was obvious blockage, dreads were holding residue and nothing was taking it out it seemed, and they weren't growing longer either. After loosening them, they finally started to grow again and wash through, but I was lucky (I think)! It was hell trying to comb out, BUT, it was good I did something because I would have lost so much more time and it would have just been even harder to get them out if I had to do it all and/or do it later! (think it was about 6months before I figured it out) Pretty sure mine's an extreme case, and as I said, I THINK I was able to salvage them, so...if you aren't having those problems, you'll probably be alright.

TXmomDani:

Soaring eagle,

Thank you for being so patient with me and all of my questions. I am wondering if this is normal? A few pieces have looped back on themselves and around 6 inches shorter.

awe awesome! The loopy stage is so fun! Looks good! :D
