dreadlocks and hobbies

dready interests

Ok, so i'm a skateboarder for 30+ years, and i guess it's a hobby or an addiction or whatever... I started around 1987 or so as a punkrock kids with my friend from school and his older brother. We built our own wooden ramps which was very cool and this older brother had dreads almost to his butt. I think that's where it clicked! His dreads were'nt natural, but he was my hero anyway!

Took me some decades to get my dreads going, but at least still skate once or twice a week and hopfully will never quit and will never cut my hair again. I'm in love with both now, skateboarding and my dreads and i hope both are for life!

EVERYDAY NORMAL MINI ITCH

General Questions

Sometimes i scratch a little with my fingertips too, but not too obsessive and mostly only once. Did you ever try cold rinses with water? After i have changed my washing routine to rinsing with cool to cold water after shampooing, my scalp feels way less itchy than before. Right now i feel those itches maybe a day before next wash, so mostly 5 or 6 days without any itching.

keep it up, you will get there soon! I remember some major changings between month 4 and 6, that was a very interesting phase when the first loops and bumps did appear!

Towel rubbing/freeform dreadlocks advice

Dreading Methods

my 2cents about your question is to stop that towel rubbing, because it won't help you at all. It might seem to help knotting in the beginning, but

you can also undo a lot of progression at the same time.

Just wash and separate, that's all you need to do. You can stick to the seasalt spray, it helps knotting, too.

Also stop cutting and thinning out your hair, you can't keep up with that while you are dreading your hair. Thinning out will destroy the locking

process as well as cutting, because some locks start to form at the tips, some at the roots.

some shampoos don't work well in combination with hard water. I figured that out myself with liquid Dr. Bronners. The most bars work ok, no matter how soft or hard the water is. I bet S.E. has an idea what to try in your case!

Second Time Dreading

Introduce Yourself

Yes, BS and or ACV seems to severely weeken the hair, so it is not recommended any more. If somebody needs a deep clean there is a recommended product on vicky's page.

I was pretty impressed myself about fast progress and changes on the natty route. I only had to wait a while for my hair getting long enough, after that everything went really quick. I was a little afraid that the messy stage could last for years and break my patience, but it was not a big deal! Everything went a little easier than expected and i could enjoy every little changes almost after every wash.

I feel like separating at this stage is keeping my hair from dreading in the front, top and sides. The back is doing amazing though. Should I keep away from separating the rest of my hair until some matting happens? It's been 3 months and no matting has happened at all.

the less you touch them, the better it ist. So separate only when really needed as you say when matting.

Second Time Dreading

Introduce Yourself

Hey Riley! I did the same thing. Like 5 years ago i went for twist 'n rip and was not too happy about the sections i did pick for my locks, so i quit after like 7 or 8 month. I'm on the natural route now for a little over 2 years and very happy that i went that route this time.

I also wash with bars since day 1, but Vicky has a liquid version too and that would be even better to use in the beginnig. I believe there is seasalt inside for a faster progress. But there is nothing wrong using the bars!

Yeah, and it's nice to be back as a part of this great community on here!

This white stuff can be dead skin. I had that after i did a baking soda wash in the past, because it is so harsh. Maybe try to massage the

skalp a little longer during your next wash and also rinse a little longer, in order to get everything out? I would guess if your skin in too dry, it would start to itch.

Dread Maintenance

FemalePheromones: Reviving this thread for a question on washing. When I wash I basically massage my scalp with my fingertips but don't go crazy becaue I don't want to risk separating the hair at the roots but I keep getting dandruff near the roots. Should I be washing harder or maybe rinsing for longer? Any advice is appreciated.

You might try some essential oils on your scalp if it is dry. Do you have issues with an ichy scalp before you wash? I don't think you do something wrong while washing.
