Yeah there's that in it too but I think it's the fact that they smell different from their friends although I like it, they are the only white kids in a Bengali school and smelling like your mum doesn't help!

Hey my dreads smell yummy! If not I get my kids on my case! Thank you for your advice though. I occasionally make a rinse of essential oils and put it through but dreads are meant to have a hairy smell rather than salon fresh surely?! I have a tea-tree etc oil spray that I put on the kids as they are at school. As for my maintenance they are pretty much left alone as lucky for my lazy self they are pretty self sufficient which is why I'm reluctant to say goodbye!

Any advice for losing established dreadz?

Ok sorry an old dready told me about pulling through years ago and now you have mentioned it I can see how that's going to make it harder! I can't remember how long I've been doing it! - (promise I won't recomend it to anyone else!) I am so torn about getting rid of them I think 'right this week' then retreat back to comfy old dread world as I do love them and can't really imagine not being 'katiedreadz' (Nadya is my family/Roma name) I have already fought a few successful battles with the lice but it's it's a stinky and anit-social process! I'm worried about being middle aged and having thin hair when I take them out as before it was thick and curly and some days I just fancy a change I guess. Thank you for your tips though, I tried to comb one out the other week and just after a few inches I had a bag of hair come off - I stopped, freaked, and plaited it up!

Any advice for losing established dreadz?

General Talk

Hey all!

I've had dreadz for about 10/11 years and am thinking it's time to lose them. I just fancy a change and I do have kids and live in fear of the dreaded lice coming round and the children are fed up with being sprayed with repellant every morning! I have never put products on them or given them much maitenence and have always thought myself fortunate for how easily they dread up neatly - until now! I have been trying to grow the tops but they get swallowed up and I hate washing them because they take so long to dry (doesn't mean I won't if anyone has a sound plan!)

I really REALLY don't want to shave my head I know it's shallow but I just won't be able to pull it off!

I wondered if anyone has done this before and has any advice? I have conditioned and combed out baby dreads before on a friend but I've tried and failed with that method on these babies so I guess I'm asking for any miraculous tips you guys may have!!

Thanks in advance!!

Dreading Methods

Ok thanks, sounds nice but we'll see if I get round to it! cider vinegar? I love jojoba on them, i can't believe yours are past your toes and you wash them etc! well done that is quite an acheivement. I just can't handle the up-keep which is why I wanted dreads in the first place vs my unruly hair! I keep them long but only down to the bottom of my back - wow you've made me wonder how long mine would be if I'd never cut them as my hair was long when they started. My daughter has a nearly 2 foot long bit sewed to her comfort blanket from about 5 years ago - gross but cute!

Dreading Methods

2 times a WEEK! wow man that's dedication! Maybe I'm clinging to my crusty roots but mine only get that sort of treatment a few times a year but I (ahem - embarrasing age confession, although cruelly young for this!) I have started to dye my roots a bit as I'm going grey!!! So they get a good wash then, although it's no longer any exciting colour just my own! Maybe I'll try it, when they get heavy I cut them (probably another no-no!) but maybe I should get them a bit shorter before I try any crazy baking soda efforts! What do you do I've never heard that?

Dreading Methods

I get them wet in the sea and rinse through sometimes but never wash with any products (I'm like the ballet russes who let the natural oils take over lol!) but you must seperate to avoid migration of dreads round your head which is uncomfortable! a bit of gentle rubbing must be good for circulation and plumping up against the gravity if they are heavy!

Dreading Methods

Maybe not for everyone then but it's never hurt mine! I'm not talking so they are tight, but if you have a bit of slack and flyaway it tidies it up - just a little ol' loop through!
