TnR

Dreading Methods

I can only speak from my personal experience, but I had my hair T&R in February (first time dreadie), when they were done there were around 24 "dreads" - within a couple weeks all but 4 come completely undone. Considering how long the process took to T&R , compared to what was left, It was kinda depressing. Hopefully yours will stick around for you. I recommend the sea salt spray from dreadlocksshampoo.com, it really does help your hair find and hold it's sections. I imagine it will be really helpful to newborn dreads.

Good luck! Don't give up no matter what.

Driving with the windows down?

General Questions

Hey, I was wondering if you experienced dread-folk had an opinion on if driving with the windows down (or top off) helps, hurts or doesn't make any difference on your dreads, especially baby dreads in the making?

I'm a little over 3 months into my journey, today a friend and I drove around for a bit in their jeep with the top off. My hair was getting whipped every which way and I was just curious if it's something I should avoid in the future.

Thanks!

I'm nervous about starting my journey again.

Introduce Yourself

I'm about 10 days short of 3 months into my first go at the "dread journey". I started with twist and rip, like you hoping to skip a few stages and to have something a little more dread-looking to start with..but after my first washing half of the sections came out, and they've continued to come out. I think I have maybe 4 or 5 sections left and I started with 20 something...It could be my hair type, it could be the person didn't T&R right - but I just want to give you a heads up, that in my experience after the first washing you tend to lose a lot of ground. Maybe your hair will be more cooperative.

One piece of advice I'd give to you from one dread-noobie to another is don't tell a lot of people you are getting dreads on a certain day, because most people have no idea how long it really takes, they expect you to come in the next day looking like Bob Marley and you get bombarded with questions like "I thought you were getting dreads??" - it just seems easier to follow the method you prefer on the down low.

Good luck with whatever you choose, and don't worry about pleasing anyone but yourself.

2 questions: Separation and Drying

Dread Maintenance

Hey guys, I apologize if I'm cluttering up the board too much, I just have a lot of questions these days and you all are so helpful:

So I have 2 questions:

1. My sections are 2 months old, and not much is going on except for a few spots. but one of the spots I have this knot of hair, It pulls hair into it from the scalp in a about a 3 inch section. The section is not circular/square though, it's more like a skinny rectangle going horizontal across my head. In the middle of the knot I can see a hole about the size of my pinky tip, it looks almost like two sections into one. All those factors considered should I separate it into 2 smaller ones? I wasn't sure if I let it grow out like that if it would be all big and flat from being a rectangle section. It's definitely the biggest/strongest/most progressed section I have. I'm almost afraid to separate it, but I will if it should be. (I tried to get a picture of it to show, but my hair is such a mess, it's hard to get one of the spot)

2. I know it's very important to get your hair as dry as possibly after washing. But I'm curious..my hair has always been curly wavy and if I let it air dry I get nicely shaped ringlets. If I use a dryer it gets frizzy and straight. It seems like if I let my hair air dry through the dreading process it could cause it to interlock/curl up on itself more, since that's what my hair does naturally. I almost feel like using a hair dryer is slowing the process down. Any thoughts on that?

Thanks for your time.

2 month "dreads" are coming undone

Help! Save My Dreads

Hello all.

Ok, so about 2 months ago I had my hair T&R'd, with a little bit of backcombing. There were 20 something knots/sections made...since then the knots have slowly but surely been coming completely undone. I'm down to about 8 that are still strongly sectioned, my hair has always been a crazy wavy mess, and it looks pretty much exactly like it did before I had the work done on it.

I've been washing my hair every 2 to 3 days with Vicki's locking up shampoo and I've done one BS/ASV wash. I've been making sure the sections stay separated and that is the only form of maintainance that I've done.

I know this is a long process that requires patience, I know that the fresh knots had to loosen in order to do their natural thing - it's just that I feel like I'm almost back to square one with everything coming undone. Tonight I saw a long strand of hair, I gently pulled on it and a pinch-worth of tangled hair came right out.

I just ordered the sea salt spray off this website, praying it will help. I feel like a couple trying to have a baby that just can't...I want this SO bad, but I feel like my hair is fighting it.

I'm going to try to add a couple pictures, sorry if they are similar, I had a hard time finding good lighting this time of night.

Any advice?

Baby Dread Maintenance?

Dread Maintenance

Hey guys, I'm sorry if this has already been covered.About a month ago I started my journey. A very little backcomb at at the root, then mostly twist and ripped. I started out out with DreadheadHQ shampoo, but since joining this site I've stopped using it. I tried Brohners, at different water ratios and as amazing as it smells, it always made my head itch like there's no tomorrow. A week ago I started using Vicki's shampoo from dreadlockshampoo.com.

My sections for the most part are all still there. 2 have come completely undone. I've done ZERO maintenance, other than washing and drying. I know it's very early still, but I'm just worried that they aren't on the right track. Is there any maintenance I should be doing on baby dreads? Should I be palm rolling or anything? I want to re-T&R the 2 that came undone, is that ok?

Should I be worried about all the loose hair? If not now, when should i ? I'm just a little lost right now. I want so bad for these to be on the right track, and as long as I know they are , I can have all the patience in the world.

Thanks for your time!
