My Dread Hair-story: 28 months after
Member Journals and Timelines
So my hair went from a fluffy, round Afro
to comb-twisted and gelled locks at a salon in November 2010).
2011, I tried the neglect method,
but still ended up twisting my dreads every so often, in an attempt to get them firm.
I've also used Dr Bronner's (Peppermint liquid castille soap), Jamaican Mango&Lime, etc for my hair-care routine.
December 2011, I stepped into some random hair-salon,
and the dude knotted my roots with a shiny crotchet-pin.
My dreads felt okay, but I feared it would be impossible to unlock them.
If ever I felt the need to do so.
All the while my parents and friends gave me a hard time.
Often, they compared my dread-look to that sported by the homeless, destitute, unkempt people on the streets.
After many years of giving in to my family's expectations, this was one matter where I was not prepared to give an inch.
I was told I had become a disrespectful, hard-headed chick... but that just gave me a thrill.
One other time, my dreads got a palm-roll treat and got put into corn-rows. Just before I went on a trip.
I still braid them into corn-rows, when I fancy a different look.
Now I know better, I'll stick with the natural. And stay off twisty-roots, crochet-pins and the like.
