Shedding so much hair!

General Questions

Oh, man! And I was looking forward to not having to worry about cleaning my hair out of the shower drain once I started my dread journey. So much for that... until they mature, at least :P

Shedding so much hair!

General Questions

Thanks, Taye. I will leave them alone and just deal with plucking hairs from my clothes for the time being, lol. I actually noticed whenever I was drying that I had one dread forming at the back that was longer than the others by a little bit and realized that it was because the end is knotted with some loose hair. It looks funny :)

Do not run your fingers through....it will undo any progress. The average person sheds 80+ hairs a day. It is not asnoticeablebecause the hair ends up brushed or combed out. Now that you are not brushing your hair, the hair is just falling out randomly. I personally noticed that my dreads form around shed hair. I have a baby dread in the front on my hairline that has several and by several i mean a lot of shed hair in it. I have been dreading for almost 5 years and the loose hair around my hairline would never knot before now. So this little fellow makes me smile.

Don't worry about the shed hair. It is normal.

Shedding so much hair!

General Questions

Hello everyone! I am over 1 month into growing dreadlocks and I used the twist and rip method. Most of them came out, however, and I'm doing free form from now on.

I have noticed with the past few washes that my hair is shedding a LOT of loose hair. Like, my bathroom floor has hair scattered all over the place after blow drying. And I'm finding lots of hairs on and inside my shirts and its very itchy if it is trapped in there. D: Anyone else have this problem? I used to shed hair a lot before dreads and I'm assuming it's just the hair coming out all at once after the knots from t&r came loose but it's still scary.

Any advice or thoughts? Should I run my hands down them and try to remove any detached hair or might that set back some of the dreading process?

TnR help

General Questions

When I first did mine, I took the palm of my hand and rubbed the loose strand at the end in a circular motion to create some knots, and then palm rolled the entire thing for only a second. It might help you if it bugs you too much having the thin strands at the end, but be prepared, because they WILL come loose soon anyway. :P

Rip and twist method

Dreading Methods

I used twist and rip method also, it's normal for the tips to be thinner than the lock. My hair was previously layered so it really thinned at the ends, but I just continued to twist them as far down as I could. Don't worry about them being perfect, you will go through a lot of changes in the next few months with your hair and especially as they mature into *real* dreadlocks. They will fall out, come loose, get frizzy, bumps, loops, and congos if you're lucky. ;) As they get more mature they should fatten up, too. All you need to do is separate and keep them clean.

Until then, just enjoy the ride and let your hair do what it wants. Which, by the way, may not be what *you* want, but that's part of the fun, right? lol

Your beads are great! Your stuff actually were some of the ones that helped inspire me to make them. ^_^ I tried making one with a shroom on it like you did and it ended up looking very warped and silly, haha.

And now I have discovered beading grids! Yay!

The string I have isn't stiff at all. But I did try doing it without the needle anyway to see if it worked and the end kept fraying before I could get the bead through. So I got a lighter and singed the end to prevent the fraying, and it was very difficult trying to force it through one of the beads so I called it quits. I'm probably not using the right kind of nylon string, but I didn't go to a craft store to buy my supplies and my choices were limited anyway.

Have you made any beads/sleeves for your dreads, SE? I'd love to see. :D

Making your own peyote dread sleeves!

Dread Accessories

After browsing the other day for dread accessories, I came across peyote sleeves with cool designs that I thought were really pretty. I remembered seeing the link for a how-to on this site and searched it, finding that it was actually fairly cheap and easy to make (assuming you are a moderately patient person).

http://www.dreadspullen.nl/tutorials/peyotestitchsleeves-tut-2.php

Me being the crafty person that I am, I jumped at the chance to make my very own designs for these cool accessories and made a run to the nearest store to grab some supplies. Different color, super tiny seed beads, beading nylon string and beading needles.

Just to give anyone interested in this project heads-up, the nylon string I bought was too thick to feed through the tiny eye in the needle, so really look closely at them before buying. I actually ended up using a small sewing needle instead, which works, but can end up sticking you while you work.

Here is my first one:

It didn't turn out too awful, so as you can see, it's pretty easy to catch on. :)

And then last night I wanted to make something a little different and made this.

Its a bunneh!!

Anyways my point to this thread is that I was interested in seeing if anyone else makes their own dread accessories and to share their creations. There are so many fun ways to decorate your dreads, lets see what you can do!
