Where does a dread begin?

A few of you have been following me on my natural dreadlock journey via my timeline thread and photo album. I'm on day 18, and I discovered a couple snarly spots right at the bottom of my hairline in back. The knots feel like they're getting dready, but they're more toward the ends of the hair than the roots. Is this the way they all start, or do they usually start knotting at the roots, or what?

usualy they dread at the ends and lock towards the rootsperfectly normal
