rock and roll no relation as theres no real relation between rock and roll and heavy metal except the electric guitar wich triggered the birth of rock and rioll
heavy metal more related to punk rock or more specificly hard core ((not all genres of metal some have a lil more roots in rnb)
rock and roll has it roots in groups like the beetles elvis etc the rolling stones are more rock less roll despite the fact they have rolling in the name
anywho
musical ties to dreads
reggae ofcourse juju etc
some gutter punks would let thier mohawks dread but that was usualy the result of extenfded blackouts or binges and not really intentional
metal well theres no musical connection between metal and dreads except a rather superficial connnection..dreads look pretty damn cool while headbanging
there are exceptions:
some metal singers/musicians maybe deeply spiritual in thier personal lives while grunting and screamming about satan and running babies over with bulldozers in thier musical life.. so thier dreading maybe a spiritual choice that then is imitated by the fans who think it just looks cool (just like how some metal fans claim to be satanists just cause its "metal" to claim that
dreads have as much root in classical and even opra as they do in rock and roll rock and the many offshoots
even in reggae the dreading roots arent in the music but in the spirituality behind it (just as must reggae is influenced by the belief in rastafarai, and not just in heavy baseline
so after all that rambling finaly getting to the point:
dreads are not music genre based but have their roots in 1 of these:
1 spritual and/or religios beliefe
2 fashion
3 idol worship and imitation of favorite idols (the i want dreads like________ syndrome)

Actually punk is more related to Rock n Roll than it is to heavy metal. Metal is more related to classical and jazz.
Punk is basically rock n roll, but faster and even simpler. Metal is more melodic and has melodies and harmonies.
That's a gross simplification, but it makes it easy enough to follow.
There's no relationship between rock and locks. If anything, there's more of a relationship to reggae. but even that's a lie. I like some reggae, but not the classic island reggae. I'm not a huge Marley fan.
I grew up listening to post punk/goth and metal. I grew into rock over the years, and only started listening to more of it in the past 6-7 years.
What music you like is only a matter of what sounds good to your ear. Since locks don't have a sound, you can't really compare them together. Plus many metal bands feature some member or other that has locks. Just like many reggae bands.
Punk has a large portion of its identity in fashion, some punks may dress a certain way because the musicians they like do. But people don't grow locks, in general, because Bob Marley or any of their other favorite musicians do
Sorry for replying to a thread that's super old, but I just want to throw out there that the Crust Punk culture is stereotypically vegan, highly political, animal loving, dreadlock wearing, patched clothing wearing individuals.
They're pretty much the "hippies" of punk, while Crust music is pretty extreme/heavy punk, very close to metal but much closer to punk music. I've noticed that most of the musicians in Crust bands don't have dreads though, it's mostly the 'crusties' that follow the music, cultures, and ideals.
I think they're pretty great people overall and it's a great sub culture of punk
Glad you bumped because it gives me the chance to ask something ive been wondering recently...whered you hear about crust punk from dillon on the coffee run?
Speaking of rock bands and dreads does anyone know why Johnathan Davis from Korn's dreads never mature?

Could it be he sheds more often than most so the foundation hairs fall out before theyre able to lock up?
Im mainly asking beause mine seem to be doing the exact same thing =(
For instance 1995. They look pretty good here
One year later 1996 theyve lost progress. Appear to be thinning out and falling apart rather than thickening up and maturing properly.
Cant blame the headbanging because munkys look fine.

I was about to reply asking you what you meant, then I took the time to google "dillon coffee run" and now your question make sense xD
There's a lot of crust in the local scene here in Rhode Island (and especially more so Boston), so overtime I just became more familiar with the genre.

Tim Fluckey, guitarist for Bakersfield-based Adema, has a theory about why so many metal musicians sport dreads. "The long, straight hair was getting pretty much bagged on for awhile, especially after the hair bands died out," he explains with a laugh. "So I think a lot of dudes were left over with this long-ass hair that they didn't want to cut off. They went to dreads so they wouldn't catch shit."
Fluckey's theory may loosely hold water, but the overall reasoning behind cultivating dreads, at least among the musicians interviewed, is a triple combo of convenience, laziness and natural occurrence.
"I was a fuckin' long-hair, an old-school fuckin' hippie," laughs Skinny, founding member and drummer of Mushroomhead. "Ultimately, I was into the whole Metallica/Megadeth type of heavy metal where long hair was cool. But as time went on, everybody was changing their hair--you know, music changes, style changes. But I was like, fuck it, man. I'm not losin' the hair; I'm not givin' up. It was just much easier to maintain it as dreadlocks than it was to have straight hair."
I found this video interesting. P.O.D front man explaining why he cut his dreads
