when do I start separating?

Just a question about separating... my hair is starting to dread and they are starting at the bottom, they are twirling together so do I start the process of separating now or do I wait until they are more 'dread like'?

if they are combining or in too bigf off sections seperate emotherwise u can get a huge dread
