Going Natural!

Just a quick question before I start my journey for real: I have about a month and a half worth of backcombing invading my hair that I honestly just can't stand anymore. It took that for me to realize that i wanted to take the natural route (and I'm so excited!). My hair has intense layering and, as of right now, the bottom layer has already fallen out completely, shifted, and re-sectioned itself to dread, and I'm okay with those. However, the short top layers of my hair are still backcombed in place, and brushing them is a total pain (literally). I've tried brushing through them already, and they are still a knotted mess, though the sections are not visible anymore. Should I keep brushing until my hair is smooth again (to give them a fresh start) or will my hair work around these few existing knots? Thank you!
