After years I've finally worked up the courage to start my dreadlock journey. I was nervous before because whenever I would bring up dreadlocks to my friends and some family I would get bad reactions. They all thought they looked bad or were gross or whatever. However my husband and closest family members have always been supportive.I let other's negative reactions be a deterrent for far too long. I'm almost 29 years old and am finally figuring out who I am. Dreadlocks, for me, are a symbol that I am becoming who I am instead of who others want me to be. I suppose they are both a style statement (I love the look) as well as deeply personal/spiritual as a message that I am discovering my true self.So now my dreads are about 17 days old. I have a lot of them...76 I think. My hair was long, with my longest layer being to the bottom of my shoulder blades. I started them with TNR after having my friend section them for me. I am glad I did them myself because I was able to be very careful to minimize damage. I'm struggling right now to be ok with the 4-6 inches of undreaded hair at my roots because that amount seems to make it easier for them to move lots and congo right there where the dread starts. But I've realized that separating the dreads will be a constant issue whether the dreads start 1 inch or 5 inches from my scalp. Maybe it's more work now, but it will be worth it!I only palm roll when needed to tame the frizzies for work. Other than that I feel like it's tons of work to separate them right now! I wash twice a week, every 2-4 days depending on how my hair feels. That's about it. Glad to be here, I've learned so much from you all by lurking up to this point :)

So glad you have made your decision. I also delt with family not being supportive and have lost two prior sets. And now I am on my final and everyone has come to accept my desicion and let me be me. Know you are not alone. As for separating them I only do it once a week. Or as I am playing around in my locks and separate as needed. You will get the hang of it as time goes on. Enjoy your journey.
