Dread Bead finish?

Woodworking is sort of a hobby of mine, and I would like to make some dread beads. At least for myself, maybe some to sell. Haven't decided yet. My question is : What do you use on them as a finish? If you leave them natural, they will "fuzz up" if they get wet, also the could crack and break from swelling and shrinking from water. I don't want to use most commercially available finishes, they off gass horrible cancer causing chemicals. Bees wax would need to be reappliedperiodicallyand I'm worried about the wax rubbing off on the dreads. Jojoba oil would need to be reapplied rather frequently and might not hold up well enough in the shower to keep the bead from fuzzing or swelling up. Basically I have no idea what to do with them.
