Dread babies, frizz, and general unruliness

Ok, I bit the bullet about 3 weeks ago and decided to dread my hair! I used the TnR method.

In the beginning I absolutely loved them - they looked SO good!

However, they're getting to be very frizzy, seem to be coming loose near the roots on top - they don't want to stay on either side and have bumps that make triangles on the top of my head - and have lots of loose hairs.

I've already had to redo a lot of them because they started congoing in bad places and some of them just came out completely on their own.

For about a week and a half I used the baking soda method followed by an ACV rinse and it seemed to get things really clean. For the last week or so I have used the Goddess dreadlocks shampoo. It smells wonderful!

I can't help but wonder - did my dreads come out because I was too rough on them while washing? Should I avoid the Goddess shampoo and continue with only baking soda for a while until they tighten up? My husband hates the smell of ACV, so I will only use it when absolutely necessary.

It could also be that I wear my hair pulled back in a ponytail fairly often for my job....

My hair is naturally fairly curly - not pencil thin ringlets, but more than wavy - relatively coarse with varied texture, and extremely thick, so I was surprised that they came out so quickly since they like to stick together in curls anyway.(I'm about a 64th Native American mixed with almost every kind of European you can think of and it all shows through in my hair - it varies from smooth and blonde to coarse and almost black). Oh, and it's just past my shoulders in length.

Do I need to chill out and just let them fix themselves? Or is there something I can do to help them along?

Not only do I love the way they look, I also really want to dispel the misconceptions about dreads where I live - conservative Oklahoma - but I'm worried that no one is going to take me seriously unless they clean up quick....

Anyway, thanks in advance!!

Love and Peace

look around here you will see thousands that dont retwist and the ones that do all have signs of trouble from it

sure you can understand the risks..thats all well and good

but if you understand there is a risk and the risk affects almost all who take the risk then why would you willingly do so?

just to make a point...theres a very small number who survived parachutes not opening while skydiving so the risk of death from jumping out of a plane with no chutes not 100% ..close (and very lil chance youd ever walk or talk again)

so say your spouse or child said hey im going to jump out of a plane with no chute would you say "as long as you understand the risks do whatever you want"?

i know twustings an epidemic just driving arpound town you can spot the ones that twist from a block away and weve seen some real devestation caised by it (luckily he recovered at least 85% in the uear since he stopped twisting)

it is a cultiral thing like the extreme tight braids and corn rows

but its a problem..50,000 19 year olds a year have to get hair transplants because of this trend..50,000 at 4-14,000 lets say an average 8,000..400,000,000 wasted on transplants on kids..thats the 19 year olds only i see the same exact issue in kids as young as 6

thats not even factoring in the salons they paid to cause these issues

i understand your concern with retwisting and i am unsure as to whether its cultural, religious, or what type of prefernce it may be that inspires the diff dred heads to loc up~ as long as they are happy. i dont know anyone with locs who does not retwist or understands the risks associated with however they style their hair (chemical, curls, natural, heat, dyes, etc) i believe everyone should research whats best for them and in that respect i can agree to disagree with you *smile.

della you should do acv everytime you do bakinmg soda to keep it ph ballanced..and you should never retwist! the scalp showing looks not :"tidy" or kempt twisting damages them and the scalp instead separate by pulling them apart..not twisting

you cant use the ACV rinse everytime you wash. You also cant expect that you can start your dreds and they just stay. Depending upon your hair texture it takes time. When i originally started mine. they were twisted. but i had to twist every week for the 1st mnth...hn every 2~3weeks. depending on how ok you are with them aesthetically...i prefer very kempt looking locs.. as they matured and began to lock maintenance wasnt needed so ofte..i only twist very couple of months now. i cant wait too long or do them too soon as the roots can become very thin and lead to damage. if i can figure out how to post a pic i will..mine originally were bout an inc long and are currently down to my waist.

I'm so glad! I just don't have anyone around me going through the same thing, so it was worrisome.... Thanks for responding :D
