Welcome Meg. THRILLED you have taken an interest and who knows, we'll prolly work together some day!SE: I will make videos here and there to give you a better idea of how you can break down ASL to actually make sense. The TOUCH FINISH... is simply an action/description of having done something...imagine getting off a plane and physically touching the ground....therefore you have BEEN there...LOL. Is that trippy or what?

Ooh, I'm so glad I found this! I'm hearing, and my dream has been to become an interpreter for the deaf for about 5 years now. I'm not very good, as I haven't practiced a bunch, but it's a huge interest nonetheless

@ recoverytrouble (and everyone else for that matter): Ask away! LOL I have been a teacher for 17 years and love every opportunity to TEACH! Awesome questions btw.You are right, American Sign Language (ASL) is a true language that has it's own science of linguistics, just like spoken Spanish, English, Russian, Chinese etc.....If ASL were a "written" language, it would look somewhat like a translation of French to English with rearranged concepts:ENGLISH: How long have you been dreading?ASL: DREAD YOURS SINCE-WHEN? (4 signs)OR....ENGLISH: Have you ever been to Tibet?ASL: TOUCH FINISH TIBET YOU?It's weird in written form, but as a visual language, it is easy to conceptualize over time. Some signs are iconic whereas others ..... who the hell knows why it came about (LOL..much like some words in English). As for a "universal" signed system, there is no such thing much as there is no such thing as a universal spoken language.Keep on the look-out for another video coming soon. Will show some simple ASL you can begin using pronto! HA!

Awesome idea Jae! So many questions but I don't wanna bombard you and hog the thread:D I know next to nothing about signing. You mention ASL, so obviously there are different versions or variations depending on region? In a sentence do you sign each word in sequence, or like some spoken languages do certain words preceed others always? Are there signs which represent a whole phrase or action? Abbreviations? As I said, there's so much to learn when I know so little. I'll stop the questions there but thank you for opening the door to learning something new and fascinating!
