Welcome. Start off by checking out the dreaducation page. After that, look at the timeline forums to see what the first weeks/months look like. There's no speeding up your locks with severe damage to your hair. They just take time and patience.

So rule #1 for healthy locks: NEVER go to a salon.

#2: Never use wax, gels, creams, or art supplies to try and "fix" them

#3: Wash, wash and wash. 2-3 times a week is best for baby locks. Get a good non-residue shampoo and have at it.

your welcome Renelle. I too bought the Black Soap at a home show. I did a lot inquiring with the lady selling it, as it does not come cheap here, $35, but she assured me it was great for dreads. It is, but not Caucasian dreads, which surely she could tell I was. She was just out to make a sale, and that really pissed me off when I found out the next day that I should not use it. I was also a vendor at that show and would never mislead someone just to make a sale. But yes, get good use of it for other parts of your body...Peace

Welcome to the community Renelle and to this wonderful site, the best on the web. The Black Soap shampoo is designed for African American type hair that needs all the conditioners as their hair texture is different from ours and is very dry, so it is not good for your use, but you can certainly use it as a body or face wash, it is great for that!.

You will get many replies that the crochet hook is not good for dreads as it breaks your hairs in hundreds or thousands of pieces, so I recommend that you never do it again. It is the MOST damaging thing for dreads. Your hair will take about 6 months to recover, but will go on a dread journey all on it's own, it just takes patience. If you want your dreads for life, then never go to a salon again, it is not necessary. Dreads are free, they grow with love and time. If you want your dreads for only a couple of years, then do what you gotta do, as real dreads are not instant and can take 1-2 years to mature.

You are right about dreads putting other people at ease, it makes us approachable to strangers. Glad you are enjoying your inner hippie coming out.....Peace
