ps don't bother palm rolling..it does nothing at all

but your right the circular rubbing does rip 1/2 the hairs right out of the head

2nd you have great instincts not wanting to do all those horrible things!

3rd all hair dreads straight hair dreads fine..

and lastly  finger untangling is combing just with a less damaging comb

if you simply stopped detangling it would dread right up

I've contemplated dreadlocks for the past decade.

I've always been a wash and go girl, with occasional additions of color.

I have thick fine hair that curls a bit when short.

Living in a humid area, I generally keep my hair braided during the warm months.

This year, as I put in 56 braids, I decided that it was time for the change to dreadlocks. I have spent about a month searching forums and vlogs to see other journeys and choose how I would start mine.

I already had my hair sectioned out to my liking, didn't like the idea of twisting and ripping my hair or backcombing it with a flea comb, as it sounds rather destructive to the hair.

I also saw several vloggers saying that having it done in a salon makes it too painful to sleep on for several days.

That doesn't sound healthy to me. Plus, these same people are adding extensions and had locs fall off.

But, I didn't want to just leave my hair to tangle up and separate on its own either.

Mainly because I haven't had to brush my hair in years. I just wash it and let it dry, then use my fingers to detangle it.

So, I chose to lightly back comb each section just enough to encourage the sections to remain separate and now, I'm letting it do as it wants to.

I have seen a number of people say that straight hair won't dread or that it's important to be locked up to the scalp and maintenance should be done to make that happen.

After looking at the examples of root rubbing, I don't want to do that either, it seems to me that this 10 minute circular rubbing of a section of hair on the scalp, would cause hairs to be pulled out by the roots.

I'm fine with having straight hair at the scalp.

Right now, my concern is finding a good shampoo that won't damage my hair or undo any progress in my journey toward dreadlocks.

In the meantime, I'm using diluted dish soap twice a week and sea salt spray an hour or so before washing. I realize that this isn't a good idea on a long term basis, but I felt that it would be better than either not washing my hair or using a shampoo that may wash out the tangles.

I've never used gels or styling products and don't wish to begin doing so now either.

I'm really happy to have found this site and look forward to suggestions as well as reading others questions and blogs.

Thanks for allowing me to join, Soaring-Eagle, your hair is awesome!
