Unfortunately, getting it done and redone did do more damage. But all is not lost. If you just don't get anything done to them again, they will heal in due time.
Don't take your nappy head anywhere to get them "worked on". The crochet needle actually makes them nappier in the long run. When you don't do anything, you hair only has 1 tip. It grows out of your scalp, and ends at the tip of the hair. By crocheting, you rip the hair into smaller piece Even if you only rip each hair in half, you now went from 1 tip to 3 tips per hair. With every rip, this number grows exponentially.
The more tips there are, the more tips can pop out and make your hair look nappier, frizzier, and itch more.
The process of healing from crocheting tends to make people freak out. Because your hair needs to untangle and loosen up a bit first. So it will look frizzier, and messier before it can properly heal and lock up again.
Don't worry about this stage. It's normal and natural. Check out the recovery forums to see what others in your situation are going through.
Welcome to the community Lu E and to the best site on the web for healthy dreadlock information. The guys are getting you on the right track and then you will no more messes. I believe you have hard water where you live, below is a map. If that is the case, then I recommend www.dreadlockshampoo.com to order bars and shampoos. They are the best for hard water, and for any type actually. With soft water, just about any dread shampoo or bar can be used, but with hard water they slowly leave a residue build up as they do not rinse out properly.....Don't worry, you will be happy with your dreads soon enough, just by joining us all here....peace

Welcome. But I have to warn you that crocheting is the second worst thing that can be done to locks. The only thing worse for locks is felting.
I know you may think that wax is worse. But wax can be scrubbed out with a good detergent, and time. And if mold does grow, it can be killed. But unfortunately, crocheting causes permanent damage, that can't be fixed. Your hair can recover from it, over time. But the recovery process from just 1 session of crocheting can take up to six months. Multiple sessions, and the recovery will take upwards of a year.
Also, the damage from crocheting causes your locks to becomeexceedinglyweaker. This is because with each pass of the hook, you rip hundreds+ hairs. Not just in half, but into smaller and smaller pieces. By doing so, you create incredible weak spots that can become so weak that over time, you locks won't be able to support their own weight, and can snap in places
