What Made you decide to dread?

General Talk

I think the first set I had was backcombed and I think I just wanted dreadlocks. The second set I have is all neglect and I got them because I got tired of having to comb my hair constantly, so I just kind of let it go.

I'm kind of glad no one has written I got dreads to be different- being a non-conformist by not conforming makes youa reverse- conformist.

Everyone says that if you leave your hair alone it will dread....

Dread Maintenance

Ive had my dreads around 2 and half years, and I have a good bit of loose hair, that won't dread yet. Like taye said, hair usually dreads at a certain length. Even as your growing dreads you loose hair that becomes part of your dreads and new hairs start to grow. Like if worse came to worse you could back comb it or T n R it, but i think it will work itself out.

Can you believe this shit?!

General Talk

First off that sucks dudeI kind of went thru what you did but backwards, a long time ago when I had my first set of dreads they were backcombed, and at the time it was like my girl friend just liked me cause of my dreads, so for alot of reasons I cut them and we broke up.But now I have a girl friend and another set of dreads, and its kind of funny her hair is like 4 inches long and mines like a foot atleast in parts a little less then others. But she likes my dreads but sometimes gets annoyed with them especially when they get in the way of our fun.

dread beads cause stinky dreads

Dreads Hair and Scalp Health

That kind of sucks SE but atleast you fixed the smell. for people that don't know tho, its because if a bead is on a dread and you wash your hair, its possible that the hair inside the bead will trap soap and water and will dry slow because it is not exposed to the air= mold and stink. This also happens with wraps too.

Can you use body oils in your dreads

Dread Products

Well the vile of green tea, doesn't list the ingredients, I did a test on my arm and it smells really freakin good, but little strong. But I imagine one drop in a gallon of water and baking soda would dillute it enough. I havent tried it yet but in a few days I might.I hate myself for saying this, but sometimes I miss the artificial smell of commercial shampoos. So thats why I'm kind interested in trying this green tea oil. And for the last 27 months, I've been using Baking soda, ACV and Dr bronners,Baking soda= no smellDr bronners= kind of has a weird smell, but the smells not so greatACV= smells pretty good and wears off after your dreads dry- also when I first tried ACV I got it in my mouth and didnt like the taste of it, now I like the taste of ACV which is kind of odd.I could also just dab a drop after I wash.I also havent tried herb teas, I do have access to alot of rosemary and thyme but dont really know what to do.Do you just boiling them in a pot of water and pour thru a sieve or filter and use the water right?

I surpose it could b worth a try, the liquid itself is really watery and not syrupy so that kind makes me think that a drop or two wouldn't hurt

The Shrinking Locks :)

General Questions

I went natural/neglect and yes they shrunk to almost half the length of my regular hair. They kind of go thru small stages of shrinking and growing, but its never as bad as the original shrinkage in the beginning.

Discrimination against dreadlocks in school hair wars on individuality

Life Issues Facing Dreads

I agree with Island momma, it's true.kind of writing this from both sides. But I think the school kind of has arguement tho, if you kid has dreadlocks and goes to school the number one thing they are going to say is that they have lice, or that the child plays with them during class and doesn't get there school work done, or that the childs dreadlocks takes away other childrens attention spans during class. With the army or religous schools, they are given a uniform and a short hair cut, and because everybody looks the same there probrobaly is less descrimination against one another, its like the pot calling the kettle black they all look the same. As there alot of hippies here that think that we should all be able to live and grow up as one big happy family, thats the way it should be.
